Game-based learning environments leverage the intersection of motivational constructs and epistemic emotions to drive educational outcomes. By analyzing the experiences of 131 students interacting with the health literacy game Antidote COVID-19, this research establishes that positive activating emotions—specifically curiosity, enjoyment, and surprise—are strongly correlated with high-intensity flow, situational interest, and overall learner satisfaction. These positive emotional states occur with significantly higher frequency than negative ones, suggesting that well-designed digital environments effectively foster constructive psychological engagement.
A central finding of this analysis is the distinct role of flow as a primary indicator of engagement. The data reveals that flow can be successfully induced through robust game mechanics even when learners possess low initial interest in the subject matter. This decoupling of mechanical engagement from topical interest underscores the necessity of intrinsically integrating educational content directly into core gameplay loops. When learning objectives are woven into the mechanics rather than presented as peripheral tasks, the game maintains learner focus regardless of the perceived relevance of the topic.
To optimize future educational software, designers and researchers should adopt a holistic measurement framework that synthesizes motivational, emotional, and cognitive constructs. Relying on a single metric is insufficient to capture the complexity of the learner experience. By monitoring the co-occurrence of flow, situational interest, and epistemic emotions, developers can better identify how specific design choices influence student participation. Ultimately, the successful implementation of game-based learning depends on the seamless fusion of pedagogical content with engaging, high-intensity interactive experiences that prioritize positive emotional resonance.
