Film, television, advertising, games and interactive media together reached record export levels in 2022.
See it on page 7Danske Indholdsproducenter 2024 presents Danish content-production data for 2022, drawn from Statistics Denmark, across the film, television, advertising, games, and interactive sectors. Its central message is that these five sectors, taken together, reached record export levels and that games have become the principal engine of growth. The combined industry employed 5,261 full-time equivalents across 1,169 companies, generating nearly 10 billion DKK in turnover and 3.9 billion DKK in exports.
Games dominate the sector's performance. The game industry accounted for roughly 37 percent of total turnover and about two-thirds of exports, with revenue reaching approximately 3.65 billion DKK, up about 19 percent from 2021, and exports of 2.6 billion DKK, up 17 percent. Between 2017 and 2022, the number of game companies rose by 26 percent, and employment grew 74 percent. Interactive producers, a subgroup of 114 firms, expanded their revenue by 86 percent over the same period, while roughly 24 game companies are owned by international parents.
Geographic concentration is a defining feature of the industry. The Capital Region holds about 70 percent of companies, 82 percent of full-time equivalents, and 91 percent of turnover, a pattern that has remained stable since 2017. Film and television show steady growth in firm numbers and exports, though they are more modest in scale than games.
The report notes methodological caveats: the 2024 edition uses a revised, more consolidated company population, so its figures are not directly comparable with earlier editions, and outsourcing in film, television, and advertising means employment is likely understated.
