Square Enix Holdings
The Square Enix Holdings consolidated financial results for the six-month period ending September 30, 2013, demonstrate a significant recovery in profitability compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. The primary objective of the report is to detail the company’s financial performance across its four core business segments—Digital Entertainment, Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising—while outlining the strategic shift toward structural reform in response to a rapidly evolving global gaming market.
Financial performance for the period showed net sales of ¥61,664 million, a 1.0% increase year-on-year. The company successfully transitioned from an operating loss of ¥5,240 million in the prior year to an operating income of ¥4,675 million. Net income reached ¥2,606 million, a marked improvement from the ¥5,480 million net loss recorded in the same period of 2012. This turnaround was supported by strong performance in the Amusement segment, which saw an 8.2% increase in net sales, and the successful launch of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn within the Digital Entertainment segment. Conversely, the Publication segment experienced a 16.4% decline in net sales due to a reduction in new releases of popular comic titles.
The company’s financial position remains stable, with total assets rising to ¥210,928 million and an equity ratio of 57.9%. Despite the positive results, management noted an extraordinary loss of approximately ¥1.6 billion related to a comprehensive review of work-in-progress game titles. Given the increasing volatility of the gaming industry, particularly regarding the shift toward mobile and tablet platforms and the competitive nature of Western console markets, the company has adopted a range-based forecasting model for future financial projections. This approach replaces specific figures to better account for the unpredictable nature of the current business environment.
