In 2023, co-op titles made up only 6% of the 14,000 games released on Steam, but they generated nearly 40% of total unit sales.
The cooperative gaming sector has experienced significant growth, establishing itself as a disproportionately successful category within the Steam ecosystem. Analysis of 2023 market data reveals that while co-op titles represented only 6% of the 14,000 games released on the platform, they accounted for nearly 40% of total unit sales. This trend highlights a strong consumer preference for multiplayer experiences, with co-op games achieving a median sales figure of 38,000 units, compared to just 5,000 units for non-co-op titles.
The industry saw a record 799 co-op games launch on Steam in 2023, marking a 14% year-over-year increase and more than doubling the volume of releases observed in 2018. The commercial viability of the genre extends across the market spectrum; even within the bottom 25% of performers, co-op titles consistently outsell their non-co-op counterparts by a factor of two. Furthermore, 106 co-op games have surpassed the milestone of 5 million lifetime units sold on the platform.
The momentum for the category has accelerated into 2024, driven by the high-profile success of titles such as Helldivers 2 and Palworld. These two games alone accounted for 75% of the 40.8 million co-op units sold on Steam during the first half of 2024. With additional titles like Content Warning and Gray Zone Warfare contributing to the sector's robust performance, the data suggests that cooperative gameplay remains a primary driver of engagement and revenue for developers and publishers operating on the Steam platform.
