Total unit sales reached 71 million through July 28, 2025, a decrease compared to the same period in 2024.
The European PC and console gaming market experienced a contraction in unit sales during the first seven months of 2025, according to data provided by GSD. Through July 28, 2025, total unit sales reached 71 million, representing a 6% decline compared to the same period in 2024. This downturn was driven by a 9% drop in physical game sales and a 3% decrease in digital volume. Despite the decline in units, the market demonstrated resilience in consumer spending, which totaled €1.33 billion—a modest 2% year-on-year decrease—largely due to an 8% increase in the average selling price of games.
Digital distribution continues to dominate the landscape, accounting for 74% of the total market share, an increase of 2% over the previous year. Digital spending specifically rose by 8%, bolstered by a 15% increase in the average price of digital titles. Conversely, the physical market faced steeper challenges, with spending falling 16% alongside a 17% decline in unit volume.
In terms of performance, Assassin’s Creed Shadows emerged as the best-selling new release of 2025, though EA Sports FC 25, released in 2024, maintained the top position in overall sales. Other notable performers included the new intellectual property Split Fiction, which reached the sixth spot, and Monster Hunter Wilds, which outperformed several other prominent RPGs. The data, which covers 15 major European markets, is derived from direct sales reports provided by retailers and publishers, though it excludes certain first-party digital data from Nintendo and figures from publishers that do not participate in the GSD tracking program.
