The country ranks 11th in total app downloads and 9th in time spent within apps.
Vietnam’s mobile app economy is experiencing rapid expansion as of early 2025, driven by high smartphone penetration and a tech-forward population. The country has established itself as a significant global player, ranking eleventh in total app downloads and ninth in time spent within apps during 2024. This growth is underpinned by robust 4G infrastructure, the rollout of 5G, and the increasing integration of artificial intelligence across digital ecosystems. The analysis focuses on three primary verticals—gaming, finance, and entertainment—using data from January 2023 through March 2025 to benchmark performance against global, APAC, and Southeast Asian standards.
In the gaming sector, Vietnam saw a 9% year-over-year decline in installs and sessions during Q1 2025, contrasting with modest growth at the global level. Despite this, App Tracking Transparency (ATT) opt-in rates remained resilient at 49%, signaling strong user trust. While session lengths decreased slightly to 27.09 minutes, specific subverticals like casino and family games showed significant growth. Retention remains a challenge, with day 1 retention at 18%, largely due to the popularity of hyper-casual titles that prioritize high-volume acquisition over long-term engagement.
The finance sector is a major growth engine, with Q1 2025 installs and sessions increasing by 64% and 84% respectively compared to the previous year. This surge is fueled by the widespread adoption of mobile wallets and a booming cryptocurrency market, where Vietnam ranks among the top global adopters. Entertainment apps also demonstrated positive momentum, with a 6% increase in installs and a 19% rise in sessions during Q1 2025. While session lengths in entertainment have shortened to 20.1 minutes, the sector is evolving through new content formats, such as short-form drama apps, to meet changing consumer habits.
