The transition of the 2020 Gamescom trade fair to a fully digital format necessitated the creation of new infrastructure to support the global games industry. In response to the cancellation of physical events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hamburg-based agency Super Crowd Entertainment, in collaboration with Gamecity Hamburg and various partners, developed the Indie Arena Booth Online. This platform served as a virtual, interactive environment designed to maintain the visibility of independent developers, replacing the traditional physical exhibition space that previously hosted over 370,000 visitors.
The Indie Arena Booth Online functioned as a browser-based interactive experience, spanning 100,000 virtual square meters and featuring more than 190 game studios from over 50 countries. The platform utilized a specialized editor that allowed exhibitors to integrate multimedia content, including developer chats, video presentations, and playable game demos, thereby enhancing the interactivity of the digital trade fair experience.
Gamecity Hamburg leveraged this initiative to support the local games scene through its "Road to gamescom" program, which provided workshops and a dedicated virtual booth for nine Hamburg-based indie studios. These studios included Tiny Roar, The Tribe, Osmotic Studios, VR Nerds, One Man on Mars, tool 1 game, Mooneye Studios, ROCKFISH Games, and Bagpack Games. The successful implementation of this digital infrastructure demonstrated a scalable model for future online industry events, ensuring that independent developers retained a viable marketing platform despite the absence of large-scale, in-person gatherings.
