The Dragon Quest franchise continues to expand its global footprint, reaching over 95 million units in total shipments and digital sales as of June 2025. Consolidated Financial Results Briefing Materials: FY3/26 Q1

Akatsuki Inc. experienced a challenging start to the fiscal year ending March 2026, reporting a 44% year-over-year decline in consolidated sales to ¥2,313 million and an operating loss of ¥1,698 million for the first quarter. This downturn was primarily driven by a 52% revenue contraction in the core Games business, resulting from a reactionary fall following a strong prior quarter, strategic title withdrawals, and heightened development costs associated with the upcoming global launch of Kaiju No. 8 The Game. While total operating expenses decreased by 18% due to a 42% reduction in research and development spending and a streamlined portfolio, these savings were insufficient to offset the revenue decline and typical seasonal fluctuations. Despite the volatility in gaming, the IP Solutions and Comics segments demonstrated robust growth. IP Solutions sales surged 168% to ¥298 million, bolstered by the consolidation of CRAYON, Inc. and the rapid expansion of the Slash Gift online lottery service. Simultaneously, the Comics segment broadened its international footprint through the MANGA MIRAI service in the United States, integrating high-profile titles such as One Piece and Naruto. The company also accelerated its expansion into new business domains through the full acquisition of the creator agency Natee Co., Ltd. and realized ¥1.2 billion in investment proceeds following the IPO of LIFE CREATE Co., Ltd. The financial position remains liquid with ¥33.2 billion in cash and deposits, providing a stable foundation for ongoing strategic investments despite a slight decrease in total assets to ¥50.9 billion. The current fiscal trajectory reflects a transition period as the company rebalances its portfolio, shifting focus toward high-potential global IP launches and diversified digital entertainment services to mitigate the inherent cyclicality of the mobile gaming market.

Games Industry Region Report China

The China Region Report provides a comprehensive analysis of the Chinese games market as of July 2025, positioning it as the most lucrative and influential territory in the global industry. The central thesis asserts that while China presents significant regulatory and cultural hurdles for Western companies, its domestic firms have evolved into global leaders through rapid innovation, sophisticated live operations, and a mobile-first development philosophy. Key findings indicate that the Chinese market generated approximately $48.7 billion in 2024, representing nearly 30% of global games revenue. Data from AppMagic and Newzoo highlight that while the domestic App Store saw a slight peak in 2021, the broader ecosystem remains robust, supported by over 701 million players. The report identifies a significant shift in industry capabilities, noting that 14 of the top 30 grossing games worldwide in early 2025 were developed or owned by Chinese entities. Furthermore, the success of titles like Black Myth: Wukong signals China’s successful expansion from mobile dominance into the premium triple-A PC and console sectors. The scope of the analysis covers major industry segments including mobile, PC, and the emerging HTML5 mini-game market on platforms like WeChat, which boasts 500 million monthly active users. It profiles dominant publishers such as Tencent, NetEase, and HoYoverse, detailing their global investment strategies and internal development successes. Methodology relies on market intelligence from AppMagic and Newzoo, supplemented by expert interviews with regional executives. The report concludes that the regulatory environment has stabilized, offering a more transparent licensing process for international partners. Future growth is expected to be driven by AI integration in development and the continued export of original Chinese intellectual property, further blurring the lines between Eastern and Western gaming markets.

Southeast Asia: Mobile Game Market Insights 2025

Southeast Asia solidified its position as the world’s second-largest mobile gaming market by downloads in early 2025, reaching 1.93 billion installs. While the region currently ranks seventh globally in revenue at $625 million, it demonstrates significant monetization potential fueled by expanding digital payment infrastructure and rising smartphone penetration. Indonesia serves as the primary volume driver with 870 million installs, while Thailand leads the region in consumer spending, generating $162 million. This growth is increasingly supported by publishers based in Singapore and Vietnam, who have emerged as a dominant global force, contributing over 5.8 billion installs to the international market through a mix of hypercasual hits and competitive titles. Market dynamics reveal a shift toward high-engagement genres and localized content strategies. Although casual arcade and simulation games drive the highest download volumes, monetization is concentrated in Strategy, MOBA, and RPG segments. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang remains the regional revenue leader, sustained by hyper-local live operations and community engagement. Simultaneously, the 4X Strategy genre is experiencing rapid expansion, highlighted by a 77.7% revenue surge for titles like Last War: Survival. Conversely, traditional MMORPGs have seen a decline of nearly 20%, making way for Open World Adventure RPGs and sophisticated strategy games that leverage deep social and competitive mechanics. The regional landscape is characterized by distinct national preferences and the global expansion of local firms. Vietnam has become a powerhouse for survival-themed hypercasual games, while Thailand shows a unique affinity for realistic sports simulations. Established titles like Garena Free Fire continue to dominate global charts by blending cultural relevance with nostalgic collaborations. Ultimately, the region’s trajectory is defined by a transition from high-volume downloads to sophisticated monetization, driven by a combination of community-led activations and the strategic global influence of Southeast Asian publishers.

Top Game Creators Academy: 入学式/懇親会を開催しました

The Top Game Creators Academy (TGCA) was inaugurated on 25 April 2025 as a joint initiative of the Cultural Agency, the Japan Arts and Culture Promotion Agency, and the Computer Entertainment Association (CESA) to cultivate next‑generation game creators capable of delivering original IP that can compete globally. Ten selected teams—five groups and five individual creators—were formally admitted, accompanied by thirty‑five advisors who will provide ongoing mentorship, specialty guidance, and business support throughout a two‑year development cycle. The program draws on the Cultural Arts Activity Strengthening Fund, allocating public resources to enable intensive, mentor‑driven training. Each creator cohort is paired with a dedicated mentor from leading studios such as Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Square Enix, while sixteen specialty advisors cover visual art, engineering, design, sound, and project management, and nine business advisors address marketing, finance, and legal matters. Progress meetings occur monthly, fostering collaborative feedback within multi‑person groups rather than one‑on‑one pairings. Participants will showcase their work at major industry events, beginning with an online appearance at CEDEC in July 2025, a debut at Tokyo Game Show in September 2025, and subsequent exhibitions at the Taipei Game Show in January 2026, with potential expansion to international venues such as Gamescom in 2026. The cohort aims to graduate by March 2027, having refined both creative and commercial competencies to launch globally competitive titles.

Consolidated Financial Results Briefing Materials: FY3/25

Akatsuki Inc. demonstrated significant financial resilience in FY3/25, characterized by a 46% year-over-year surge in consolidated operating profit to ¥3,915 million. While total sales experienced a marginal 1% decline, the core Games segment maintained stability through high-performing legacy titles such as Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle and Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe. Strong overseas performance and successful large-scale events effectively offset nearly ¥6 billion in development expenses for upcoming projects. This period also marked a strategic turning point as the Comics and IP Solutions segments achieved profitability, driven by the international launch of the MANGA MIRAI service and the rapid expansion of the Slash Gift online lottery platform. The company’s investment arm further bolstered the balance sheet, realizing ¥2,840 million in proceeds during the fiscal year with additional capital gains anticipated from the IPO of LIFE CREATE Co., Ltd. in early FY3/26. Despite a reduction in total headcount from 803 to 697, primarily within the Games division, permanent staffing levels remained consistent, reflecting a shift toward operational efficiency. This lean organizational structure supports a robust financial position, with ¥33.3 billion in cash reserves earmarked for a ¥35 billion growth investment plan over the next three years, focusing on mergers, acquisitions, and next-generation game development. Looking toward FY3/26, the group anticipates sustained growth in sales and profit, anchored by the upcoming release of Kaiju No. 8 The Game and the continued scaling of its digital content divisions. To reflect this positive outlook and strong liquidity, the shareholder return policy has been revised upward, increasing the target Dividend on Equity from 3% to 4%. This strategy signals a transition into a new growth phase where diversified IP solutions and global service expansions complement the established mobile gaming portfolio.

Australian Video Games Industry Policy Platform: February 2025

The Australian video games industry represents a vital economic sector, generating $339.1 million in revenue and supporting 2,465 full-time positions during the 2024 fiscal year. With 93 percent of revenue derived from international markets and over half of all studios anticipating continued income growth, the sector is positioned to evolve into a global powerhouse. The primary objective is to scale the industry to a $1 billion valuation by 2030, a goal that necessitates a strategic shift toward long-term policy frameworks, increased federal investment, and enhanced export support to facilitate international publisher partnerships and local intellectual property development. To achieve this growth, the industry requires a modernized regulatory environment that replaces fragmented, reactive policies with evidence-based standards. Current classification and online safety laws often impose disproportionate burdens on developers, hindering innovation. By streamlining these frameworks and reducing administrative red tape, the government can provide the certainty required for studios to scale operations. Furthermore, the industry advocates for a more integrated approach to public policy, specifically by leveraging "serious games" to address societal challenges and fostering closer alignment between government initiatives and the practical needs of game developers. Sustaining this trajectory also depends on addressing critical structural challenges, particularly regarding talent acquisition and capital access. The industry faces persistent talent shortages that demand improved migration pathways and a renewed focus on STEAM education to build a robust local workforce. By combining these educational and immigration reforms with targeted research and development incentives, Australia can foster a competitive ecosystem that attracts international investment while empowering domestic studios. Ultimately, the transition to a billion-dollar industry relies on a collaborative partnership between the public and private sectors to prioritize innovation, intellectual property protection, and sustainable economic development.

Integrated Report 2025

Bandai Namco’s 2025 Integrated Report articulates a strategic vision centered on the "Fun for All into the Future" purpose, which emphasizes deepening 360-degree connections with a global fan base. The company’s core thesis relies on an "IP Axis Strategy," which leverages a portfolio of over 500 intellectual properties—most notably the Gundam and Dragon Ball franchises—across four specialized business units: Toys and Hobby, Digital, Visual and Music, and Amusement. By integrating these domains, the company aims to maximize the long-term value of its assets through transmedia development, localized marketing, and community-focused services. Financial performance for the fiscal year ending March 2025 reached record highs, with net sales of ¥1,241.5 billion and an operating profit of ¥180.2 billion. Building on this momentum, the 2025–2028 Mid-term Plan establishes ambitious targets of ¥1,450 billion in net sales and ¥200 billion in operating profit by FY2028. To achieve these goals, the company is prioritizing global expansion, particularly in North America and China, and has committed approximately ¥600 billion toward strategic growth investments. Key operational shifts include a restructured business unit model to improve agility, a 50% total return ratio for shareholders, and a target of 50% or more of total sales originating from overseas markets. The company’s long-term sustainability and governance framework are integral to this growth. Bandai Namco has adopted a "backcasting" approach from a 2035 vision to align current strategies with future market demands. Governance is reinforced by a hybrid board structure featuring independent outside directors, while executive remuneration is now tied to earnings per share and sustainability metrics. Furthermore, the company is aggressively pursuing environmental goals, including a 50% reduction in energy-derived CO2 emissions by 2030, alongside robust social initiatives focused on human rights, supply chain transparency, and the cultivation of a diverse, global workforce.

The Gaming and Interactive Media Opportunity in India

India’s gaming and interactive media sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, evolving from a $2.4 billion market into a projected $7.8 billion industry by fiscal year 2030. This growth is underpinned by a young, digitally native population, widespread smartphone penetration, and a robust digital payment infrastructure. While the industry is pivoting away from online money games due to regulatory shifts, the broader ecosystem is finding resilience through a transition toward core and mid-core digital gaming, esports, and emerging interactive media platforms. The market is increasingly defined by a mobile-first approach that prioritizes culturally relevant, vernacular content to capture audiences in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Domestic studios are scaling their capabilities to serve both local and global markets, leveraging generative AI and gamification to enhance user engagement. Monetization strategies are maturing alongside this expansion, moving toward in-app purchases, subscriptions, and nanotransactions facilitated by seamless payment systems like UPI AutoPay. These financial models are proving essential for the sustainability of diverse segments, including social discovery, audio streaming, and micro-dramas. Niche sectors such as devotional tech and AI-driven companionship are also emerging as significant growth engines. By integrating localized storytelling and personalized digital services, these platforms address specific cultural needs and the rising demand for community-driven experiences. Although the industry faces ongoing challenges related to regulatory scrutiny, content authenticity, and the necessity of optimizing customer acquisition costs, the overall trajectory remains positive. The convergence of technological innovation and a deepening consumer appetite for interactive, short-form content positions India as a critical player in the global digital media landscape through the end of the decade.

Insights into the Japanese Gaming Market: 2025

The Japanese gaming market stands as a uniquely high-value ecosystem, generating 9.1% of global industry revenue despite accounting for only 2.2% of the worldwide player base. This disparity underscores a high average revenue per user driven by a mature demographic that prioritizes quality, depth, and domestic intellectual property. While Nintendo and established local publishers maintain a firm grip on the console sector, the landscape is undergoing a structural shift as PC gaming emerges as a critical growth engine, representing a substantial $2.5 to $3.0 billion opportunity for international entrants. Success within this region necessitates a nuanced understanding of local consumer behavior, which diverges significantly from Western trends. Japanese players demonstrate a profound preference for narrative-driven, single-player role-playing games and fantasy-themed experiences, often eschewing the open-world, sports, and multiplayer-centric titles that dominate other major markets. This cultural specificity acts as a barrier to entry for many global publishers, who must tailor their content to align with these distinct aesthetic and gameplay expectations to achieve meaningful penetration. Beyond cultural alignment, international companies must navigate complex macroeconomic conditions, most notably the volatility of the Japanese Yen. While the market remains a lucrative target, the combination of currency headwinds and the entrenched dominance of domestic franchises requires a strategic, long-term approach. By focusing on high-fidelity, story-rich experiences that resonate with the local appetite for solo play, external publishers can effectively capture a share of this high-margin market, provided they remain adaptable to the evolving preferences of the Japanese gaming audience.
