How To Market A Game
The Steam store funnel involves impressions, click-through rate (CTR), and wishlist conversion rate. Developers can directly manage CTR and wishlist conversion through page optimization.
Key Control. Developers have direct control over their game's click-through rate and wishlist conversion rate on Steam.
Optimizing a Steam store page is a critical marketing strategy for independent developers who lack the massive promotional budgets of major studios. The core thesis is that while developers have little control over the number of impressions their game receives, they maintain full control over the conversion funnel—specifically the click-through rate from the capsule image and the wishlist conversion rate once a user visits the page. Small, incremental improvements to these metrics compound significantly over time, leading to substantial differences in long-term wishlist acquisition.
The analysis utilizes data from two games, Lofi Ping Pong and Omen Exitio: Plague, during a standard seven-day period without external promotional interference. Despite receiving a similar volume of impressions—approximately 35,000 each—the games experienced vastly different outcomes due to minor variations in conversion rates. Lofi Ping Pong achieved a 9.6% click-through rate and a 4.7% wishlist conversion rate, while Omen Exitio: Plague saw 6.7% and 2.7% respectively. These seemingly marginal differences resulted in Lofi Ping Pong generating nearly triple the weekly wishlists of its counterpart.
Projected over a full year, these percentage gaps equate to a difference of over 5,000 wishlists, which is comparable to the impact of multiple viral social media posts or successful festival features. The findings conclude that an unoptimized page acts as a "leaky bucket," diminishing the effectiveness of all other marketing efforts. Developers are encouraged to move away from comparing themselves to industry-wide benchmarks and instead focus on iterative, data-driven improvements to their own store pages, testing elements like capsule art, tags, and descriptions to consistently outperform their own historical conversion metrics.
