Create free accountI [Music] what's up everybody welcome to another episode of game dev unchain I am your host Brandon Pham this is the number one game development podcasts on game development and the lifestyle thereof I did that out of order so thus of a course have you seen the title it's a round table of news episode and it's a partnership as well we are fresh from the G Dux event no one knows when we actually recorded this so as we get the game dev lunch a game dev lunch chain set up and running will be kind of sitting here in quarantine chilling out while that is uh constructed so I have here of course my dear friend a regular at the roundtable news table regram how you doing great hey what's going on
alright so Ray as always let me kind of you sneak my hand so I gotta stand up so for people who are just listening to the podcast you guys are missing out man this is the every deed x marks a new era of became dev unchain podcast and you know since we're getting some more production values we're we're definitely investing in the right places here so Ray as always I kind of like to start these episodes especially while we're still in Cova Dara how are things man since the last month has things gotten better hiring process all that stuff I mean it's it's the same and you know like I'm still yeah we're still hiring things things that all that stuff work stuff is like we're not missing a beat when it comes to work yeah but you know
being cooped up in house and not being able to do stuff and being able to do a few things you know outside and stuff but not really getting full freedom of movement is is a a.m. yes right at this point I'm um I am definitely at this point out over officially over it you know but you know I'm hanging in there never doing it we're doing okay yeah I think the the feeling the feeling is pretty mutual I've been hearing the same from my friends even when they were pretty much cool with the first month seeing as a kind of like a welcome for occasion very unexpected vacation time getting in touch with our feelings and family and relationships being a father or wife again or you know a mother thing but it is at that breaking point where I'm starting to hear people going a bit crazy mentally just feeling trapped inside the home and I'm pretty sure you're hearing the pressure I don't know how serious you guys are walking down
over there but like at least on my side of family members or friends are getting more relaxed and it's scary but at the same time we're jealous of it too it's like oh man they're they're all hanging out together now and we're seeing the cases going up and you we're trying to like be mindful but at the same time it's very tough seeing that type of freedom that everyone's having and you're not really ready for that creasing getting a watch I think yeah you could be watching what everybody else is doing you're just kind of worried about will you got going on right yeah and you know I think the next you know next month you know are nothing that's what maybe going into June you'll start seeing some easing up right like in California things are opening up starting in June yeah so they may may be okay it may be okay or at least start getting better in the next few weeks yeah yeah I hope so
people letting up is one thing but I just feel like the measures in place aren't there yet for us to kind of get freely tested if we're worried and whole aftermath is of actually being treated after you do get it I feel like none of that is in place for step two so the step one seems even if they open things up you know the cases everywhere especially we live in California you know in the Bay Area I've been hearing a lot of cases just driving up in the Norwich County as well if everything is trending up as expected yeah although I've heard just today though Orange County is like fully but the restaurants are open and people are hanging out in Orange County I wasn't hearing that today that people are seeing a lot of that in Orange County specifically this is realistic as you
can be a man I'm having so much fun with these with my new set dude it's hilarious just wait just wait til I get that game Evan chainset man it's gonna be so funny but anyways going back to you gotta put your you gonna put your face with a smaller monitor I know why would I put myself on the set just to talk to you I mean I can do things like this because it's hilarious did I get costumed up man people are gonna see a new new brand in going forward so anyways on to the news right the people
listening are like what the hell are these guys talking about you know really check out the video of us kid it's it's freakin hilarious so the first thing I want to talk about in the last month it's been I feel like a pretty pretty slow month just in terms of things that really stuck out Unreal 5 just broke the internet in my opinion with their tech demo you know I was blasting you on text you know it's just it's and all this stuff I mean it was insane it was jaw-dropping even for me I think we saw shortly before the Xbox events showing their next-gen game and it was meh you know it was like kind of expected it wasn't like a quantum leap type of kind of look dev right but when the Unreal 5 showed that new type thinking and basically changing the way we would work it really got me excited and scared of the same sign so I'll you being the graphical engineer out of the group and worked with plenty of engines
and of course working with unity this is again expressing your own opinion on your opinion ray I mean what do you think about all that so while you do that I'll pull up get that plan now I think like no doubt isn't credit right but the tech the tech is is a feat it's really a lot of work that went into it and it looks great like there's just no there's no doubt here that it's really looking and Anna definitely sparked a lot of conversation I didn't at the marketing you know everybody's talking about it everybody was going crazy and definitely all the artists that I know of the model there's an environment to artists and although were just eating oh my god this is amazing well yeah you know what will happen with my workflow how will I work oh my god okay I can't wait right so everybody's are super excited about it and it's great you know it's a really good tech
demo to show off show up that tech on PS 5 I think it really shows the power or what we could theoretically expect you know that we could pump out onto the onto a PS 5 and it really gets me excited about that the amount of detail and amount of it's really the detail that I think is missing a lot of games that it kind of shows off so I think that's amazing at the same time though you know this is not plan to be out into like the end of 2021 right and there's still probably a lot of open questions and performance and like how do you really make this this content what went into actually making that demo how much work did it take but the tousle think we're where the work flows so there's a lot of unanswered questions around around that part of it
some more time so yeah I mean that the first question is of course I mean I kind of know the answer but I want to make it clear out there for people who haven't seen the demo or if you're watching this I'm gonna get the video going so of course how practical is that real how much of it is real how much of it is faked I mean I know we're neared launch and usually in that case whenever a tech demo it's near launch it's pretty close right it's not like a fairy tale but I want to hear kind of your opinion of because there were new tech in there that the net I believe the lumen the first time global domination is really introduced in a practical unreal right yeah yeah I would but yeah definitely
like I think bloomin is interesting and and how you know and definitely the approach that they're taking with it is super interesting and there's a lot of other real-time GI techniques right and this it looks like living this kind of combining a bunch and really deliver on something and kind of also leaning on the fact that um nanite is I think also helped to help do some of the some of the heavy lifting at a high detail level but yeah so yeah definitely real-time GI is a huge productivity saver for for people that are making these levels and and I think that's that's really a big deal Nana Nana and oh I think there's so much implications in like having the budget and the artistic team to even be able to create the great assets of that quality somebody right oh no I don't need to the pre assets that quality I could just use crystal or whatever right but then you
know you don't want all the games look the same right you want to be able to add your stamp in your artistic touch right so it's really a high bar for for a lot of game t gate game dev teams out there to even be able to try to reach right and and I have no idea what the asset sizes are but there's so many unanswered questions there but it's but it's just no doubt that that tech demo is amazing mm-hmm I mean let's try to break it down I mean there's two main system as we kind of discuss there is a Geo one and they were talking about how I mean I think I read into it a bit where it's kind of like how virtual texturing what's kind of introducing I'm real recently and the idea is kind of similar to how they apply it to geometry do you mind kind of talking more about what the theory is behind that and how they're applying it per pixel a certain amount of triangles and so it's just
what you see is not exactly yeah yeah I don't know all of the details about Lake of course they have to release all the details either around how the GI system is working they kind of detail the real let me see if I get in front that look again but there was there was something you know about and a lot at a long distance you're using a much more coarse representation of seen like voxel voxel-based geometry or jump she discovered into that course of course voxel grated and use that to kind of do your the traces against for me for the GI and then when it's closer to camera is using more details detailed information right so that's how you could kind of get like a large you justice on our scene with real-time GI without like killing your performance right because the further away you are you use a more closer approximation right so feel like that that part is
really interesting and every artist every artist spots the delay with baking and bake steps they just want plop in their lights and and it just works right looking to take away the you know it's one by source right so so like if you with these kind techniques the more license you have the store is gonna go right I'm still but just doing one main one main light and having that be if you real-time she is a big improvement over having nothing right sorry yeah so you know when it comes to real country I think that's that's really cool there's a lot of techniques out there for like you know there's lighten it does a real-time GI but as it bakes them there's DBT I it that also has some some type of baking involved in where you have to kind of like make some sort of some sort of occlusion or visibility on calculation for the probes that you're
that you're doing the GI on so like fastest and that's truly like no baking and you just drop some lights in that's actually cool yeah no baking right so all the details yeah the prep work behind it the one thing that scares me is how people look at this demo and just especially they haven't done game development right the PC is finally like a skip a skipping step for basically 20 to 30 years of game dev knowledge they say oh no these done I guess I shouldn't learn that are optimized or any of that technique seems like I could just create something in ZBrush drop it and light it call it done which is foolish yeah yeah yeah I think I think that promise is a little bit over selling right I think it's still still to be known how much of how much
of this job chica you have in a game where you're like hate my target is 4k 60 frames a second how much of this how much of your game could be this geometry the that's on though right and and so yeah I think people ready to abandon all of the things you've learned about how to optimize assets and LEDs and all that hold hold your horses on out right right and the other thing was point about this technique too but I don't think anybody really noticed is the environments very static yes right so so many water actual dynamic movements like that it's it's unclear how that how this effect translates that you know I think everyone's character some character artists are still like that character art if you're still like damn I guess I guess I don't have a silver bullet just
yet character artists are already cheating this way encouraged ended the way they build their problems this is exactly how they are spoiled is the spoiled nosov a character artist at some point I'm gonna write a book on it it's just ridiculous dude I remember this one time where we were so constricted with our levels where we were like all right this is the amount of textures yeah yeah yeah and then basically the characters would have six times that with a character obviously I'll just use one for a finger another one for an eyeball 2048 max but that's just how they think that's how they are I mean in a way the characters are pretty close to camera but it's just one of those things I feel yeah I think
environment art is just by the nature of what we do have a little bit more care with how we optimize and make things work because the impression of the environment especially something like what we're seeing right now you know making it run making it look at the same time that stands up to unwell made character it's very important to make it feel like one I had right but well I mean this demo achieved what it wanted needed to achieve which was impressed the [ __ ] out of everybody and instead a high bar I mean you gotta have these types of things to kind of stretch out you know the possibilities and even if you don't hit that that that mark every time you'll still end up pretty close to it which is in the end a better product for everybody right so yeah I'll say like for for like film and TV production like this is where this stuff is like
really promising right mmm for games there's some promise there it's still very unknown like like in practice like how you have to use this how did you do it out yeah and like how would our team you know be able to get through your vision across with this tacit and not go crazy with huge as assets and take for every victim and all of that yeah this part they're just showing off right here I mean this is incredible oh my god yeah it's yeah it's great this one have a demo it's great so here's here's where I'll talk about some of my philosophical beliefs you know we're coming into another generation right yeah of console hardware and we're showing again we're showing absolutely amazing graphics
right absolutely amazing graphics look at these graphics look look at the the level detail you could get there's there's a big difference between these graphics and like say the games last gen right but you know character animation character we fit all of that is still the same right they talked about in the video talk about some events whilst a day with like I K and the coughs there were scarf and all that and yes cool but they it's not as big a leap as these graphics are you saying those disciplines are lazy is that what yeah they don't do as much [Laughter] what I would say is that you dr. gameplay guys or animation folks they'll tell you the same the same thing it's
like we focus on every gen we focus on graphics craft is easy it's the easy thing to sell the thing that people could obviously see is better that we don't really give a lot of love to to some of the other disciplines right although like there was a lot of talking this a lot about audio right because audio seems to be something that people want to focus on this I am I'm and and you know you've worked on games every game you know audio team gets like hey you want to get two percent yeah you can you can get whatever scraps you have leftover in the memory for your dough audio right and so look now they're you know now we're actually like real proper 3d spatial sound and those all sorts of modeling of your how you hear and Saturdays know this kind of nonsense right yeah can you expand on the nonsense because when I heard that I didn't live like what do you mean 3d sound we have that then we have that already can I just hear it's coming from like this serious yeah but
but yeah yeah we have 3d positional Safran sounds over there - behind you - left you whatever usually right but then actually you'd be able to do proper reverb and and it changes based on the room that you're in and a different smaller room that's just so we're talking a moniker so all the effects that used to be done in post-production you know same idea like any real-time applications just to hear or if you haven't yeah or if you to do it like in a different jet takes up a whole core or get around the main 3x and then you're not audio guys you got like - gonna - uh you got like a half a millisecond or cork and they'll second lecture for this stuff racy came - that's two weeks um and and this generate there's a lot of
talk about audio processing and and audio Hardware specific audio harder if you do this in hardware right and so it's audio person stream you think it so hopefully you know more games like focus on that beat me to that as well I'm not just the graphics I said yeah I agree I'm I hear a lot of talk with well with characters especially they're trying to like finally do something with hair I mean it's been the same technique for for a few gen now we're talking about hair assimilation actual physics with the hair and and really fancy stuff that the film industry have been pioneering for a while now yeah same with the cloth same idea cloth simulation great you know on girls hair start doing the ancient special here right but also this this is read the focus of this demo either you have characters in this one especially I mean I felt like is probably a art direction choice where it
felt more like stylized right so it wasn't very yeah I've seen better characters and most definitely not about the character yeah it's all about the environment for sure I mean it's the most important department of the game pipe we make everything work we create worlds bro matrix wasn't about I guess it was about the characters we're talking about matrix them yeah anyways kids kids video game making is a teams or do you know sweetie well I mean like the lighting system I mean you made a valid point to you know the they really bragged about the GI solution but it's from a single light source they didn't really play too much with all of this one they have one light source with one
effects source so two at most and it seems like the rule still applies to next-gen where too many dynamic lights will kill your your processors so that has interesting when you you know especially if you can trace your chase you're tracing raised around rights yeah the more you have to do that and you have to do more of that if you're more like sources rights so this actually leads into my next piece of conversation so rate race in the last year and a half especially starting with that Star Wars GDC was like the onslaught of the next wave and we thought we're gonna focus on that for the next few years which we are but then this whole lumen system happened what's your take on that is there gonna be a combination - is rate racing gonna be better because it's still struggling with let's just hardware some limitations right there's not much we can do about that or what's your opinion about that yeah I think
it's a big topic right but um but generally I think like permit lumen is doing is retrace alright yeah but just kind of like in a software and compute right and kind of doing it in a way that's efficient for this use case right and there's other other yeah there is like straight up like you know DX are in a video that most show like global illumination right but those that technique that dude straight up DX are rendered for the whole of your global illumination is just not but the cost is still very high even if you have a twenty atti you want and if you want to run it and like a really high resolutions it's it's a problem at high resolutions right so some technique like this like lumineer where it's like kind of doing like a like a three-stage approach to to generating the GI it's a
way of kind of reducing the cost and getting the believable look right so like I mean she doesn't see what more what more games are gonna do like I know like you know here's a war showed they were talking about raytrace reflections for for Xbox series X so I'm curious what more and more games to what extent they do rate racing on the consoles so I mean kind of going back to the original point right when people first saw this especially movies I call them noobs where they saw this demo where they're like abandon every type of valuable knowledge that we built the blast 20 years forget it let's just throw all [ __ ] to the wall right there talking like film people now I would say the news all needed in stuff like that some of them some veterans were excited about
that prospect as well and some veterans or supers some veterans are super excited about it and then kind of joked about it right I do you mean I could just take my seat brush and drop it straight in amazing I can't wait right we're not all brain explode the grading is T if you're into graphics and you're making video games awesome yeah it's exciting this is why we're in Ames you know you can't ya you can't not be excited by this like this is this is really expensive yeah so let me let me ask you this like with the last tech demo right from all engines right usually near launch for ps4 I feel like a lot of the games actually surpassed those tech demos it were just kind of talking about unreal right and we're talking about real right now
like I feel like a lot of the later generation like last of us to all these other games have been coming out yeah have mean it's totally killing it so do you feel by the end of PS 5 maybe not that long where we're gonna see something like this in a playable way where it doesn't seem PlayStation was it so the PlayStation 3 or Playstation 4 demo the box'll the box opponent racing line right that never actually came out right right ever came out and rights in anything else performing and actually useful and it was also another cool demo from that way back right so like it's very possible to then you never seen this in any game or any game reaching this quality either right or you see part right you know you see games where a
couple of a couple of hero pieces are using this this technology then that I am talking about and and I'm more bullish on uh on human being something that you can use prosecute minigames I know there's a lot of lot of people working on similar techniques for realtime di right so yeah like like I think you'll see something like this and it's possible that this could this is the benchmark for games to strike too many years down the line on PlayStation five and Xbox series that's right before we continue this week's episode let's have a word from our sponsor more and more companies are working remotely but parsec for teams let's game makers break free from the CEO work from anywhere you can use parsec for professional and personal use to connect computers x 60 frames per second ultra high-definition video streams with super precise inputs for mouse handling and
controller support working together is as simple as sharing a link with a teammate you can then share files or view work or even work together in a single program it's the closest thing to being in the same studio I actually use parsec for running G ducts this year and it was the greatest way for me to connect to my main computer and for my team to work with me to deliver the best virtual game dev conference so I definitely see a huge use for remote working but also playing games with each other the biggest thing with the remote desktop is that there are security concerns however parsec four teams ensures that only people on your team has access to your projects connections are peer to peer and encrypted never touching the back end and futures two-factor authentication and other security measures that gives you a peace of mind so like mentioned before the best use cases using parsec for teams is perfect for level design animation game
development play testing and more unless you seamlessly connects programs like unity unreal Maya cinema 4d and others so hundreds of triple-a and indie Studios are already using parsec 40 to stay connected to their work so go check it out at parsec gaming comm forward slash teams it seriously is one the easiest and fastest and reliable remote desktop applications I've ever use and it's perfect for gamers and game developers alike so go check it out in the link description below now back to this week's episode yeah I would want to bring at this point like when people there are general reactions to this is like oh my god is exciting right and then and then there's a another type of reaction and let me just kind of call them burnouts people were kind of washed up from the industry where they look at this is like and there's a legitimate concern where they feel like the the fidelity of what's expected from this
type of demo from the consumer from the publishers where the team size is not exactly growing right and not everybody is sourcing mega scans that has readily available assets to kind of populate the world they're they are very concerned with this type of demo and expectation what's your feeling is this old tech that was all right tech demos are aspirational right but yeah they you need a crazy talented and skilled our team to make this look you need that and a lot of and that is not that is not the majority of the industry right this level quality in this level detail is not what all game creators want to make right so even though PS 5 as well series XL have way more GPU horsepower or way more cores and all this kind of stuff right some people still just want to make I'm just trying to figure the game
that's reasonable the cannibal trust me right have people still just want to make Animal Crossing I'm across to make an aquiline right and it's not anywhere near this level of fidelity because it doesn't need to be right because it's it's a different type of game right and there's still space for those different types of games but those different types of games and this is this is historically I think true right you want to sell hardware you want to sell a console box right nobody nobody wants to see the new version I have no crossing to make that decision right they want to see what kit what is the absolute maximum that this thing to do what is the aspirational target of what this box can do and that's why these technologies is yeah so it's best again just treat this as aspiration on don't be the the war war worried about the
apocalypse of game development yeah and I think like if you looked at the Xbox event back in a while back both Athena the third-party games that could be coming out of Xbox series X than it already is called right yeah none of the right this quality level right and and and so like don't mix don't expect every game car now that constant would look like this here right this isn't right I would still have expect more what what you saw that Xbox demos to be the norm definitely I mean that's a very interesting point like even with the first party publishers like their Xbox team and their Sony team or whatever that seem to have like more stability and infinite resources to kind of deliver these well yeah this is gonna be a special case type of studio to kind of deliver this rant yeah like don't get me wrong right I think Xbox we have not seen the Xbox first-party stuff right really from
South years but we but we haven't seen halo other stuff right we haven't seen you haven't seen the heat that Sony's gonna come with with on PS 5 first party right like we have no idea right yeah June soon what was it June 3rd or something that's they be announced their event so that's actually that's last week if you're watching this they just announce it today where they're gonna have an actual PlayStation 5 event they're gonna keep the what's the lead engineer mark marsinah as far away from the premises as possible to is a mystery his name is Ernie Ernie Ernie mark Cerny keep away from the premises of this presentation of event they're trying to get people interested not low people to quarantine sleep right so yeah it's gonna be I think that's when they're gonna show stuff yeah I
start to see like sheet expect to see stuff that looks really nice that's what I'm expecting now we'll see we'll see what happens yeah all right man I mean that and that's pretty much it I think everybody was super I'm kind of actually long we kind of turned this into you like a a slightly better than developers reacting to Unreal Engine five I've been seeing that pop up like every day all my god have we done that low this is more discussion this is a fancy meeting yeah and then my phone was just vibrating I was getting ava's over the place the people were freaking out like this is for real this definitely is broke man or the topic this was a topic of discussion every single game dev studio around it's exciting on down mm-hmm yeah I don't I
don't even think between ps3 to ps4 i I saw a demo that was just this exciting it's been a while for us I believe it just feels so at a grasp and even with discussing this we have no idea how they put it together they haven't really shared too much details about it except for maybe combining a lot of the techniques that you're saying that we have now to leverage the fakery right [Music] this is really fake like it just this is good like there may be some clever placement of things and like you know so of course it's controls camera right right but it's just you know I can't say it's fake I gotta say it's really good it's really good this is why everybody who makes a demo for a game needs to have that that marketing guy in there because I feel like they really nailed the beats it's like all right here's a statue from ZBrush right my god this yes yeah here's
this here's a roomful of them static environment this whole ten let's just jump through it real quick they really nailed it man I feel like the beats were awesome they're just updated every every two seconds yeah marketing marketing machine is some point for sure but it's not just the marketing it's like it's an oppressive like it felt like everybody was in the room to get their take and I feel like a lot of these gameplay demos unless the designer is really on top of their game and understand that side a lot of people miss that that you know thinking of it like music right every like a minute or so something has to happen to really keep it engaged it's been awhile since I seen a demo like that and maybe really nails it but it takes a lot to get everybody on the same page to deliver something like this this year yeah all
right I mean we spend a good amount of session talking about and real fine let me kind of switch over the other game that is more within our grasp finally has a release date and I kind of want to talk about a bit and I didn't see this whole thing I didn't see this whole thing just yet and I saw this is actually kind of my first time watching this with you Ray that's how important you are to me so all right oh yeah you broke you broke in the set actually this is after G deck so I think you're doing this video a disservice as well this is a bad one showing in it I know this is great but showing it's such a terrible resolution all right here we go this is cool so I'm actually playing through Last of Us finally all right I've heard good
things so I'm gonna play through it finish and ever finish last of us actually should but if they enjoy I enjoy what I played right yeah so it was a ps2 game and it was pretty impressive for looking at games yeah the games is intense right against me intense yes real I didn't plan on ps2 actually I played the piece no it was on ps3 and then I played it on ps4 oh so it's not released on because is renamed yeah that's right yeah and then they ported it to ps4 I see you're right yeah ps3 game yeah still impressive as a ps3 game yeah yeah Sony man they it's something Xbox is completely jealous of where they just release hits it's an instant classic every time they really now I but it comes with the price right
pretty much from what I heard with all there soon a studio it's they're really crazy with the development and the pressure is very high for each of them so maybe that little money is intense what the [ __ ] yeah this is not even the most fencing that video like it's pretty it's pretty dark intense is hoping but this looks great I mean the characters look great this is um expectations and this even looks more like kind of what we seen so far from the Xbox event I'm sure the first party is gonna look better but this is what we were led up with before the Unreal 5 demo so that's why it was just so crazy when we saw I saw it no this is cream of the crop like you know current current gen graphics you know them just everything about it but just like the graphics right like this is one thing I really notice about this this demo like as you keep going
through it everything artist gameplay video of it right p.m. of animation state changes the the the one of the things that the player can do is crazy right and then it also all looks great and it flows the animation of spray change change of animation that's great I already see it smooth fluid like it's it's this is good and there's just mechanics and gameplay galore races yes really good I mean we're talking about that how those departments have been slacking right so is it just so I don't understand animation as much because it's not what I do right are we talking about just more animation are we talking about contextual animation are we talking about more in between animation to kind of make this feel a little bit more fluid or a new technique behind it that's making it work better maybe it's
more new tech behind it too right but you need all of that right you need animation you need you need a close collaboration with the animation programmer and the animators and make sure that you know you can and set it up you know state machines or blend trees or whatever the tech is for me for the animation side of things right and this make sure that it all works together all seriously and then the players moving and using the controller and getting those inputs and make it a few rights and not look janky with a different Larry disables to joystick I think you know there's a lot that goes into this looking good and all of these different three C's like every you know crouching of the gun swimming you know using all these different science weapons and and mainly a shooting you know whenever like there's a lot here like a lot and right and it all looks really good yeah I
wonder what happens because he said the what was the tech that like GTA kind of I feel like Lucas art was the first that kind of introduced it with the animation system that had contextual something like that yeah it was real time reaction and it wasn't like maybe was supply at animation but it was more about reacting to environment I haven't seen that yes well I mean this feels like it has some of that but it's just something hasn't been as popular in this current gen yeah something people still do this is also costly right like procedural animation you see there she had her hand on the wall right and so there's a lot of like procedural animation that that you lay on top of the keyframe door and animated stuff right you know and you do that in those
contextual use cases to give it more feeling right that is subtle but like it just feels right so I do see some of it in here as well but I think like when I when the Jeep was GTA and and the Star Wars the the corners in Wisconsin I was being called the one I for a Force Unleashed yeah like whether they were doing that stuff too but it was like super janky and still very new technical time you're not great right so people have kind of done a lot of advancement since then like around that around that stuff and then definitely you see sort of eight years it looks good it's great does look good it looks great I mean I'm trying to look at the character stuff I mean it seems you know the hair is balance and stuff like that but like the way they
made the character is still very similar to it what we're used to just just cloth animation to use the other arms the runnings a little like this this is really good yeah and then how look just how the camera transitions do you know from like Game Boy camera to okay now many I'm gonna get out of here and the cameras like showing you Tek key areas of interest where else to draw your attention like it's just the level details crazy so I watched I watched this love like yeah yeah I'm gonna play this email-id even finish the person I'm like yeah I think I'm gonna have to play this what games you you don't play besides like first-person shooters there's a lot of games that I played but uh but this this kind of this kind
of stuff you just have to take a look at it's just really yeah I mean wow that's so nice to use do you feel like they're their Studios are kind of like at the bleeding edge yeah on average in terms of publisher consistently graphically gameplay everything who's your favorite yelled if you say like you know Naughty Dog and and samyak and gorilla at the talked about this for me these days and but then also I think Ninja Theory yeah always has something something hot to come with whenever they make something and we know Microsoft you know like they showed what was it just soon a sacrifice or whatever like the next one right at the at the game of video game awards to show this short clip of a character like chanting or
something that looks absolutely incredible right so if they're gonna make a full game that looks like that at that qualities can be amazing you know me so but yeah but the list of of like consistent really high quality stuff always on point is is not that long yeah it's getting shorter I'm sure I'm sure forgetting somebody but but yeah I can't nothing just come to mind right away I feel like this well let's compare that I just has a little fun way to kind of end this episode is um we're near the end we're about to see the cards from Sony finally and more from first party Xbox which is probably later in the summer how do you feel like the list last gen
stacked up to how the ps3 air gen ended as a whole were you pretty impressed with it was it as just on par as expected or did you feel like we made a pretty big leap some huge strides right between ps3 and ps4 like naturally yeah but I felt like the difference like that there was a dream 1080p 720p is noticeable yeah but then 1080p to 4k that's huge is less is less so duction less when you less so only only think if you have a big-ass DVD and you sit close to it now
you're gonna notice a difference right but I like no and then also like this this generation a lot of games don't run at like maybe 4k right where you like it just wasn't playing dynamic dynamic up spent playing a lot of tricks to keep the framerate great when you are just to like you know 14 40 years of like that right now r9 900p or whatever right there's many different resolutions games run at these days to get performance and still look good right now um so so like and I still think the difference like with between for Canton a piece like not that bigger difference the one of the tech that came around this generation that I thought was a bigger difference was like HDR versus not each year right right if you look at some of these games on on a chair display like like it's noticeable when they do a good job in their presentation of HDR image
is a bigger range yeah that granddad rented and emption looks really nice on it he's sharing his place mm-hmm so I think that's a big thing right and now when one of the things that I've been talking about a lot I'm hearing more and more people talk about is 60 frames like so the next generation I'm here more talk than 4k 60 and and I think 60 frames is a way bigger difference yeah then 1080 to 4k okay I mean that definitely yeah that definitely lasted a lot longer than we only went to topics but it was a big one it's basically all about unreal and Sony wonder what what other engine out there can can match that gray gray looking forward to hearing the competition I mean when I thought to Renato yeah I'm pretty pretty cocky about what you guys got up your sleeve so I'm pretty excited
what do you guys got going I mean I just think the next and it's there's a lot of cool stuff happening like not unity stuff but I'm just talking I just love cool stuff happening in industry right now and you know folks are thinking of new ways of getting players involved in thinking of we have this new tech that's kind of making like my current PC look like a pile of crap like I'm excited about what people are really doing the kind of the level of quality they could get but I think I say I want to see almost e60 being kind of a de facto standard if you're not running to see like what are you doing and but I also know that folks are gonna be like now we're just gonna run 30 and just make it you know just feel crazy moving like with the graphics right so yeah you're probably seen both sides of that equation this next gen okay I'm excited to see what happens
yeah I'm excited too I mean what else we're gonna do we're all successful we have only there's only this could be Ray buying the assistance man who else is gonna have enough money by then will you invite us to get your console you're gonna have a mask on be six feet I know the one thing that has been kind of taking the becks he has been VR other type of systems like I'm maybe go ahead you know what he just reminded me cuz I actually just recently you know how I'm always on here picking up beat Sabre right and I said finally I got a quest I got it I know just it's just me I've got a quest oculus quest oh you finally got it okay how do you like it and I've been playing beat saver and uh yeah yeah that game is legit legit did you feel the gear like it made
a step upgrade from what you expected where it should be like there's a reason why I office what's the song yeah yeah it's you there's a reason no it's not just that sheet very but it's very very good it's very good like is it is it sorry to cut you off go ahead yeah I've a vibe and I have oculus question it feels like night and day like it's it's really good are you talking about the comfortability or are you talking about because the graphic was it doesn't match up to your PC right I mean what work type of graphics I'll retire my well I'm sick I'm sorry I think the screen resolutions higher than what's in device right the fact that it's not tethered to my PC and I just still get pretty decent like the graphics is good right and the tracking
and I can move around and not be tethered and like if it's a completely different experience without without the tethering like it's really good and then like beat saver is also just my jam right and it's my type of game where it's it's kind of you can you take it really serious and get really with it or you can set fun with it right and I play Pete Sabre am I on my quests and I'm like I've been playing way more be sabre on my husband and then playing half like that yeah whatever I mean you're you're trending backwards yeah obviously I understand you if you played if you played it on a quest like you'll be like okay as I see the appeal of this I see yeah I do want to try the quest I got the other one the ref s because I didn't know the quest would be tether at one point so it sounded like it works fine doing that so you have the
best of both worlds you can actually carry things around yeah it's just it's good well I mean I'm looking forward I mean I think Sony of anything will have something very clever I feel like they have the most VR sets sold they have the best reach it's just there upgrades are slower obviously so hopefully they talked about it a bit I don't know maybe the June event won't be about that at all yeah I would imagine our vegetation talk about the console and the games and if if there is VR it'll be like next year sometime it'd be like 8 so now we're adding VR to this thing right no that's what I'm going to machen okay I have no idea we have both no idea well I mean it's gonna eventful I wanna I want to thank you for dropping by my new pad so maybe the next
time we meet I will I will leave this Motel actually get my studio again [Laughter] values did you the big of your environment are I get I need some the Knicks unreal that I need some Moomin and then nice to kind of put more rocks on one side dude my sets are gonna look insane did you can I just let me win their videos man I'm gonna people are gonna react be reacting to my virtual sets dude it's how popular it's gonna be it's like let's drop in it I'm he's gonna have a bunch of statues behind me for no reason right because that's what the devil is about get some quick soul mega scans at aka rocks because we can that's why so
as always as a pleasure talking to you man I know super late out there so I want to thank you for your time and yeah this is the last time you're gonna see the G duck set and we're gonna retire this set until the end of the year all right I'm gonna leave it back on to Ray cameras keep shutting off I want to thank you guys for your time I see you guys next month this is a round table news episode be safe out there guys have a good one you [Music]
The introduction of Unreal Engine 5 marks a pivotal shift in game development, primarily driven by the integration of Nanite geometry and Lumen real-time global illumination. These technologies promise to revolutionize production pipelines by automating complex tasks like light-baking and enabling the use of high-fidelity assets without traditional optimization bottlenecks. However, these tools are not universal solutions for development challenges. While they offer a significant visual leap, they do not replace the necessity for rigorous character animation, physics simulation, or efficient asset management, leaving the practical performance requirements for full-scale, playable titles as an open question for the current console generation.
Industry experts caution that high-end tech demonstrations function largely as aspirational marketing tools rather than immediate standards for the broader development community. Most studios continue to prioritize cohesive art styles and refined gameplay mechanics over raw photorealism, as evidenced by the critical success of titles like The Last of Us Part II. The consensus suggests that while Unreal Engine 5 sets a high bar for graphical fidelity, the majority of creators will remain focused on balancing visual ambition with the technical constraints of real-world production environments.
Looking toward the future of the industry, the focus is shifting away from the pursuit of 4K resolution toward more impactful player experiences. Advancements in 60 frames per second performance, HDR technology, and 3D spatial audio are viewed as more meaningful improvements to immersion than incremental increases in pixel density. Furthermore, the evolution of hardware, such as the untethered performance of the Oculus Quest, highlights a growing emphasis on accessibility and user experience. Ultimately, the next generation of gaming is defined by a strategic blend of high-end graphical tools and a commitment to fluid, responsive gameplay that prioritizes player engagement over mere visual spectacle.
