Stream Hatchet
The Turkish Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK) enforced temporary bans on both streaming platforms.
The Turkish Information and Communications Technology Authority (BTK) recently enforced temporary bans on streaming platforms Twitch and Kick, citing concerns over the promotion of gambling to the nation's youth. This regulatory action highlights the Turkish government’s aggressive stance on digital content, which included the blocking of over 137,000 websites in 2022. The bans, which occurred in late February 2024, forced a brief disruption in service that significantly altered the regional streaming landscape.
Data indicates that Kick responded more effectively to the regulatory pressure, successfully negotiating a return to service after two days by restricting gambling-related content. Following the ban, Kick experienced a 61% growth in average minute viewership (AMA), reaching a peak of nearly 21,000. Conversely, Twitch faced a more prolonged five-day outage and saw its AMA drop by 40%, from 50,000 to 30,000. Furthermore, unique channels on Kick increased from 1.7,000 to 2.5,000 during this period, while Twitch’s unique channel count declined from 8.1,000 to 6.5,000.
The disparity in recovery stems largely from platform-specific content strategies. Kick aggressively reduced its gambling-related hours watched in Türkiye from 33.3% in late 2023 to just 3.7% by February 2024. In contrast, gambling content on Twitch remained stagnant at approximately 18.7% of its total viewership. By proactively aligning with government concerns, Kick has managed to accelerate its growth and capture market share from the more established Twitch, which continues to struggle with regulatory compliance and shifting creator loyalties in the region.
