The 28th annual Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards, held in conjunction with the 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming in San Francisco, recognized the most innovative contributions to the global independent game development sector. The event serves as a primary showcase for boundary-pushing titles that frequently influence the broader gaming ecosystem.
The surreal strategy game Titanium Court, developed by AP Thomson and published by Fellow Traveller, secured the Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, in addition to the Excellence in Design award. This win marks a significant milestone for AP Thomson, who becomes one of the few developers to receive the Grand Prize twice, having previously contributed to the 2025 winner, Consume Me. Titanium Court was highlighted for its unique integration of match-3 mechanics with tactical roguelike elements, which allow players to dynamically reshape the battlefield.
The awards ceremony honored a diverse array of projects across several categories. The Nuovo Award, which recognizes titles that challenge conventional perspectives on gaming as a medium, was presented to the first-person horror game HORSES. Other notable winners included Poco for Best Student Game, Eclipsium for Excellence in Visual Art, Baby Steps for Excellence in Audio, Perfect Tides: Station to Station for Excellence in Narrative, and 13Z: The Zodiac Trials for the WINGS Award. The fan-voted Audience Award was granted to the narrative-driven title Wednesdays. These selections reflect the festival's ongoing commitment to spotlighting creative excellence and technical innovation within the independent development community.
