Tabletop role-playing games have experienced significant growth, yet they currently lack a standardized, formal methodology for evaluating player experience. Unlike digital gaming, where established frameworks exist to measure engagement and performance, the tabletop medium is defined by its improvisational, collaborative, and social nature. The primary challenge lies in creating an evaluation tool that accounts for the unique influence of Game Masters, complex group dynamics, and the fluid, unscripted storytelling inherent to the genre. Establishing a rigorous framework is essential for providing designers, organizers, and players with actionable insights to refine future gaming sessions.
To address this gap, a multi-stage development process is necessary to create a validated evaluation instrument. This process involves stakeholder interviews, item pool generation, and factor analysis to quantify six core components of the tabletop experience: cognitive challenge, immersion, agency, character attachment, group dynamics, and the role of the Game Master as a referee. By adapting metrics from digital game research and integrating them with qualitative feedback, it is possible to transform informal debriefing into a structured assessment that captures the nuances of narrative and social interaction.
The scope of this research encompasses the broader tabletop ecosystem, emphasizing that future investigations must move beyond player-controlled characters to include the experiences of Game Masters and other stakeholders. By grounding this work in established academic theories regarding player motivation and engagement, the industry can move toward a more comprehensive understanding of how these games function. Ultimately, the development of a holistic evaluation tool will bridge the gap between subjective experience and objective design, fostering a more intentional and rewarding environment for the global tabletop community.
