Tencent’s first quarter 2023 financial results demonstrate a period of broad-based growth and improved operational efficiency. The company reported total revenue of RMB 150.0 billion, representing an 11% increase year-over-year and a 3% increase quarter-over-quarter. This performance was supported by recovery across its core business segments, including domestic gaming, online advertising, and financial technology services.
Key financial metrics highlight a significant improvement in profitability. Gross profit reached RMB 68.2 billion, a 19% year-over-year increase, while non-IFRS operating profit rose 32% to RMB 48.4 billion. The non-IFRS operating margin expanded by 5.3 percentage points year-over-year to 32.3%. Free cash flow saw substantial growth, reaching RMB 51.8 billion, a 240% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. These gains were driven by a combination of revenue growth, cost optimization strategies, and a reduction in loss-making activities within the business services segment.
Segment performance was varied but generally positive. Value-added services revenue grew 9% year-over-year to RMB 79.3 billion, bolstered by a 25% surge in international gaming revenue and a 6% recovery in domestic gaming. Online advertising revenue increased 17% year-over-year, benefiting from consumption recovery and increased spending from e-commerce platforms. Additionally, FinTech and business services revenue grew 14% year-over-year, reflecting a rebound in payment activities and the stabilization of cloud services. The company maintains a strong liquidity position, reporting total cash of RMB 370.5 billion as of March 31, 2023, and continues to prioritize shareholder returns through share repurchases.
