These games use simulated business funnels to facilitate active learning.
Core benefit. Serious games are effective for teaching complex professional concepts, such as digital marketing.
Serious games serve as a scalable and effective mechanism for professional upskilling, particularly when integrated into corporate training environments to teach complex concepts like digital marketing. By utilizing a simulated business funnel covering top, middle, and bottom-of-funnel strategies, these tools facilitate active learning through engagement. The effectiveness of such training relies heavily on the interplay of motivational drivers, specifically attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction, as defined by the ARCS model.
Research involving 76 professionals indicates that there is no singular, universal formula for achieving high levels of learning engagement. Instead, success emerges from various configurations of these motivational dimensions. While no individual factor is strictly necessary in isolation, maintaining participant attention stands out as the most critical component, appearing consistently across the most successful engagement configurations. This suggests that game designers must prioritize capturing and sustaining interest to ensure that pedagogical objectives are met within professional settings.
The findings emphasize that game-based learning is most impactful when supported by active interaction between instructors and participants. Because different audience profiles respond to varying combinations of motivational stimuli, designers should tailor game elements to align with specific learning objectives. By moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach and focusing on the nuanced application of the ARCS model, organizations can better leverage serious games to foster skill development across diverse sectors, including business, healthcare, and education. This evidence-based approach underscores the necessity of strategic design in transforming digital simulations into high-value professional development tools.
