Sega Sammy Holdings
Sega Sammy Holdings outperformed initial financial expectations for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2022, reporting a consolidated operating profit approximately 6.0 billion yen higher than projected. This growth was driven by strong performance in the Entertainment Contents and Pachislot and Pachinko Machines segments. While consumer software sales were lower than the previous fiscal year—which benefited from peak stay-at-home demand—results remained significantly stronger than pre-pandemic levels. The company attributes this to a rising global baseline for gaming activity and improved operational efficiencies following structural reforms in the pachinko division.
The Entertainment Contents segment is currently focused on the global expansion of existing intellectual property through remasters and remakes, with a long-term strategic goal of developing a Super Game by 2026. Key upcoming titles, including Lost Judgment and Shin Megami Tensei V, are expected to drive volume in the second and third quarters. Meanwhile, the Pachislot and Pachinko business faces a challenging environment characterized by the closure of smaller halls and ongoing component procurement risks, though utilization rates in remaining venues have stabilized at 70% to 80% of normal levels.
Regarding the Resort business, the company maintains a long-term commitment to Integrated Resort (IR) development in Japan despite political uncertainty in Yokohama. While the potential withdrawal of the Yokohama project would necessitate a reevaluation of investment timelines and capital allocation, the company intends to leverage its existing expertise from the Paradise Sega Sammy venture in Incheon to pursue opportunities in other municipalities. Management remains focused on balancing these strategic investments with a disciplined financial strategy to maintain equity control.
