Riot Games has introduced a new League of Legends Esports Global Power Rankings system, developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Designed to provide a standardized, data-driven assessment of tier-one teams worldwide, the system debuted during the 2024 World Championship. The initiative aims to offer fans and analysts a transparent, objective metric for evaluating team performance and regional strength throughout the competitive season.
The ranking engine utilizes a blended Elo metric, which calculates a weighted average consisting of 80% team-specific Elo and 20% regional league Elo. To ensure accuracy, the model incorporates contextual match weighting, where international events and knockout-stage matches carry significantly more influence than regional or group-stage fixtures. The system employs a three-year evaluation window for regional data and a two-year window for team performance, allowing the rankings to account for roster volatility while maintaining a robust sample size.
Riot Games confirmed that the rankings are updated daily during major tournaments to reflect the latest match outcomes. The system has undergone rigorous testing to validate its predictive accuracy, showing a strong correlation between expected and actual results. Future iterations of the platform are expected to integrate granular in-game statistics, player-specific power rankings, and refined weighting factors to further enhance the precision of the model. The final rankings for the 2024 season are scheduled for publication following the World Final on November 2, with plans to carry the system into the 2025 competitive cycle.
