Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported a challenging financial performance for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2018, characterized by a significant decline in profitability compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Consolidated net sales reached 179.0 billion yen, a decrease of 9.0 billion yen year-over-year, while operating income fell sharply to 11.7 billion yen from 33.7 billion yen. This downturn resulted in an operating income margin of 6.5 percent, down 11.5 percentage points from the prior year.
The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, experienced the most substantial impact. While high-definition game titles such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Just Cause 4 bolstered sales, increased development amortization and advertising costs suppressed segment profits. The smart device and PC browser game sub-segment also underperformed due to a lack of new hit titles and reduced licensing income. Furthermore, the massive multiplayer online (MMO) category saw declines as the period lacked the major expansion disk releases that had driven results in the previous fiscal year.
Conversely, the Publication segment emerged as a growth area, reporting increases in both net sales and operating income. This success was driven by strong digital comic sales and the continued expansion of the Manga Up! application. The Amusement segment saw a rise in net sales due to new machine releases and stable facility operations, though operating income declined due to higher machine renewal costs. The company maintains a focus on leveraging existing intellectual property and optimizing development organizations to stabilize performance, while acknowledging that future results remain subject to market competition and economic fluctuations.
