The ENJEUX-S project, funded by CANARIE Inc., presents a real-time online communication interface designed to enrich educational games and simulations developed within the SAGE network. Its central aim is to introduce telepresence into online educational play by integrating video, voice, chat, whiteboard, and access management directly into browser-based game environments. The interface is intended to support collaborative learning situations such as direct dialogue, immediate assistance, and shared strategy, and it draws on existing SAGE shells, the Carrefour virtuel de jeux éducatifs, and third-party online games.
Architecturally, the system is built on a service-oriented (SOA) model using Web services, XML/SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, with a client layer built in Flash, a network layer running over the CAnet4 high-speed fiber backbone with IPv6 support, and a server layer combining a Flash Communication server with a data server and database. A key claimed advantage is that users need only a webcam, headphones, and a high-speed connection, with no special software downloads. The project also proposes translucent Flash overlays and selectable display skins so players can keep participating in a game while communicating with others.
The design process followed an iterative model adapted from ADDIE, combining analysis, design, development, and formative evaluation with expert testing and small samples of target users through a Learner Verification and Revision approach. The paper is a short conference contribution, and it describes the project's stages and intended outcomes rather than reporting empirical results. Anticipated benefits include wider use of educational games and simulations by Canadian educators, bilingual accessibility, and increased international visibility of Canadian research and educational communities.
