Square Enix Holdings reported positive financial growth for the first half of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020. The company achieved net sales of ¥120.7 billion, representing an 8.2% year-over-year increase, alongside a 62.9% surge in operating income to ¥15.9 billion. Net income attributable to parent company shareholders rose by 32.0% to ¥10.9 billion. These results reflect a diversified performance across the company’s core business segments, including digital entertainment, amusement, publication, and merchandising.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as a primary driver, though results were mixed across sub-segments. The MMO sub-segment saw growth fueled by the release of the "Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers" expansion, and the Games for Smart Devices/PC Browsers sub-segment benefited from the successful launch of "Dragon Quest Walk" and the continued performance of "Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe." Conversely, the HD Games sub-segment recorded an operating loss for the period, attributed to the timing of major releases, the amortization of development costs, and a ¥2.35 billion impairment loss on content production.
Other segments contributed positively to the overall financial health. The Publication segment experienced significant growth in both digital and printed formats, bolstered by the "MANGA UP!" application. The Amusement segment saw increased sales and profit due to strong arcade operations, while the Merchandising segment grew through the release of character goods tied to owned intellectual property. Despite these gains, management maintained its existing earnings guidance for the full fiscal year, citing market uncertainty regarding the HD games sector. The company continues to prioritize the development of titles based on existing intellectual property to ensure future stability.
