Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022. The company achieved net sales of ¥273.6 billion, an increase of ¥20 billion year-over-year, and operating income of ¥50.1 billion, representing a growth of ¥9.1 billion. This performance was driven by robust results across multiple business segments, particularly the Digital Entertainment and Amusement divisions, despite mixed outcomes in specific sub-segments.
The Digital Entertainment segment remained the primary revenue driver, posting ¥211.6 billion in net sales. The Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) sub-segment performed exceptionally well, bolstered by subscriber growth and expansion pack releases for Final Fantasy XIV. Conversely, the High-Definition (HD) games sub-segment saw lower year-over-year sales compared to the previous period, which benefited from major title launches. Additionally, the company noted that several new smartphone titles underperformed initial expectations, leading to a strategic shift toward increasing internal development capabilities rather than relying heavily on outsourcing.
The Amusement segment experienced a significant recovery, moving from a loss in the previous year to an operating profit of ¥1.3 billion, as facilities resumed operations following pandemic-related closures. The Publication and Merchandising segments also contributed positively to the overall results, with the latter highlighting a strategic interest in digital transformation and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to drive future growth.
Looking ahead, management maintained its full-year net sales guidance of ¥340 billion while revising profit forecasts to account for market volatility and the performance of new releases. The company plans to prioritize human capital investment, including competitive compensation, to navigate rising global talent costs. Future strategy remains focused on balancing new title releases with the ongoing management of existing intellectual property and exploring emerging blockchain-based gaming opportunities.
