Square Enix Holdings reported its financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, highlighting a period of transition characterized by a lack of major title launches. The company recorded net consolidated sales of ¥69.9 billion, a year-over-year decrease of ¥15.7 billion. Despite the decline in top-line revenue, operating income rose to ¥10.8 billion, an increase of ¥7.8 billion, driven primarily by reduced development cost amortization and lower advertising expenditures compared to the same period in the previous year.
The Digital Entertainment segment, which includes HD games, MMOs, and mobile titles, saw net sales decline due to the absence of significant new releases. However, the segment’s operating income improved as the company focused on cost optimization. The HD game sub-segment specifically benefited from a multiplatform strategy, with strong catalog title sales in the US and Europe. Meanwhile, the MMO sub-segment remained stable, and the Amusement and Publication segments reported growth in both sales and operating income, supported by post-pandemic recovery and successful intellectual property performance.
Looking forward, the company is prioritizing a shift from quantity to quality in its development pipeline. Management is implementing rigorous project validation, leveraging AI to improve development efficiency, and refining internal management accounting systems to enhance long-term profitability and budget control. While the company maintains a strategic investment budget of ¥80–¥100 billion for the current medium-term plan, it continues to balance these growth initiatives with shareholder returns, including potential share repurchases. Future performance is expected to be bolstered by a slate of new titles scheduled for release throughout the remainder of the fiscal year.
