Square Enix
Square Enix Holdings reported strong financial growth for the six-month period ending September 30, 2015, characterized by increased net sales and improved operating margins. The company achieved consolidated net sales of ¥86.4 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of ¥13.2 billion, while operating income rose by ¥4.1 billion to reach ¥12.6 billion. The operating margin improved by 3 percentage points to 15%, driven primarily by the Digital Entertainment segment, which remains the company’s core earnings engine.
The Digital Entertainment segment generated ¥60.2 billion in net sales, with the MMO and smart device/PC browser sub-segments serving as the primary growth drivers. MMO performance was bolstered by expansion packs for major titles, while smart device games benefited from the full-period contribution of established titles and the successful launch of new games. Conversely, the HD Games sub-segment experienced a quieter period regarding major releases, though the company maintained its strategic focus on long-term digital sales and upcoming high-profile titles. Other segments, including Amusement and Publication, faced year-over-year declines due to the absence of comparable hit products or arcade machine launches from the previous year.
Management noted a quarter-over-quarter decline in operating income between the first and second quarters, attributing this to the high hurdle set by initial MMO expansion sales, upfront marketing expenditures for upcoming HD titles, and the proactive recognition of valuation losses on underperforming smart device and e-sports titles. Despite these short-term adjustments, the company maintained its initial full-year financial guidance. Strategic priorities moving forward include expanding into the Chinese digital publication market, continuing the transition toward e-money payment systems in amusement facilities, and leveraging new intellectual property across mobile platforms.
