Square Enix Holdings reported financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, highlighting a period of mixed performance across its diverse business segments. The company achieved net sales of ¥260.5 billion, representing a year-over-year decline of ¥10.7 billion. Despite this dip in top-line revenue, operating income rose by ¥8.1 billion to reach ¥32.7 billion, while net income attributable to parent company shareholders increased by ¥2.0 billion to ¥21.3 billion.
Segment performance varied significantly. The Digital Entertainment segment, the company’s primary revenue driver, saw net sales of ¥188.6 billion. While the MMO and mobile gaming sub-segments experienced growth due to successful expansion packs and new title launches like "DRAGON QUEST WALK," the HD Games sub-segment faced challenges. High development costs and write-downs on content production accounts, coupled with a difficult comparison against the previous year’s major releases, resulted in an operating loss for that specific sub-segment. Conversely, the Publication segment performed strongly, with net sales and operating income rising due to robust digital and print sales. The Amusement segment experienced a slight decline in both sales and income, exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Looking ahead, the company has refrained from providing consolidated financial forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021, citing significant uncertainty caused by the global pandemic. Management noted that the crisis has impacted arcade operations, supply chains for physical game distribution, and development timelines for outsourced tasks. Despite these headwinds, the company remains committed to its mid-term strategy of increasing digital sales, expanding cloud-based services, and maintaining a business structure capable of generating consistent annual net sales of ¥300–400 billion.
