Nintendo’s financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, reflect a period of mixed performance characterized by a decline in hardware shipments offset by favorable currency fluctuations and strong digital software sales. Net sales for the quarter reached 307.4 billion yen, a 4.7% decrease year-on-year, while operating profit fell 15.1% to 101.6 billion yen. Despite these operational declines, the company reported a 28.3% increase in net profit to 118.9 billion yen, largely driven by significant foreign exchange gains resulting from the depreciation of the yen.
The primary driver for the decline in net sales was a 22.9% drop in Nintendo Switch hardware unit sales, which totaled 3.43 million units. This contraction was primarily attributed to ongoing global semiconductor shortages that hindered production capacity. While the hardware lineup expanded with the inclusion of the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, the overall gross profit margin remained stable at 60.0% due to higher component costs and a shift in the hardware sales mix. Conversely, the software segment demonstrated resilience; digital sales grew by 16.0% to 88.0 billion yen, now accounting for 53.0% of total software revenue. First-party software sell-through remained robust, achieving its second-highest first-quarter level since the console's launch, supported by new releases such as Nintendo Switch Sports and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
Looking ahead, the company has maintained its initial consolidated financial forecast for the full fiscal year, anticipating a gradual improvement in semiconductor procurement from late summer into autumn. Management remains focused on maximizing hardware distribution for the upcoming holiday season. The company continues to support the platform’s lifecycle, which is currently in its sixth year, through a steady pipeline of first-party titles and third-party software releases.
