The study asked whether competitive gaming is associated with differences in neurocognitive function and physiological stress responses once physical fitness is controlled for.
This study aimed to discern neurocognitive and physiological distinctions between competitive gamers and non-gamers, specifically controlling for physical fitness levels. The central finding indicates that competitive gamers possess significantly superior psychomotor speed, as evidenced by higher scores in the Finger Tapping Test for both dominant and average hand performance. This enhancement in psychomotor speed was observed despite no significant differences in five other cognitive domains, including executive function (Stroop, Modified Card Sorting, Trail Making), spatial processing, and decision-making (Iowa Gambling Test).
Crucially, the research established that when fitness levels were matched between the two groups, there were no significant differences in physiological stress responses to cognitive tasks, such as changes in heart rate and blood pressure. This suggests that the observed psychomotor advantage in gamers is not accompanied by a generalized enhancement in other cognitive functions or a unique physiological stress profile under controlled conditions. The scope of the study involved 24 participants, equally divided, and defined gamers as individuals playing a minimum of five hours per week.
While highlighting the specific psychomotor advantage, the study acknowledges limitations, including a relatively small sample size and a broad definition of "gamer," which might obscure more nuanced differences present in elite-level players. It also suggests that the cognitive tasks employed may not have been sufficiently stressful to elicit more pronounced physiological or cognitive divergences. Future research is recommended to explore specific gaming behaviors, physiological responses during actual competitive tournaments, and the intricacies of decision-making strategies in high-stakes gaming environments.
