Microsoft’s financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024 demonstrate a period of record-breaking performance for its gaming division, characterized by strong software engagement despite a decline in hardware sales. Total gaming revenue reached $3.919 billion, representing a 9% year-over-year increase. This growth was primarily fueled by a 13% rise in content and services revenue, while console hardware sales experienced a 7% contraction compared to the same period in the previous year.
The quarter was defined by the successful launch of Starfield, which served as a significant catalyst for user acquisition. The title drove record-breaking single-day Game Pass subscription growth and contributed to a new high for hours played per subscriber. While the company maintains its policy of not disclosing exact subscriber counts, leadership noted that performance in both Game Pass and first-party content exceeded initial internal expectations.
Looking ahead to the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, Microsoft projects substantial revenue growth between 45% and 49%, with content and services revenue expected to rise by 55% to 59%. This optimistic outlook is largely attributed to the integration of Activision Blizzard into the company’s financial reporting and the release of major titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. With the acquisition finalized, Microsoft now manages 13 franchises that each generate over $1 billion in revenue, including major intellectual properties like Candy Crush, Diablo, and Halo, positioning the company for a robust holiday season.
