The acquisition of Activision Blizzard was the sole contributor to this significant revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025.
Microsoft’s financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 highlight a period of significant growth in the gaming division, primarily fueled by the integration of Activision Blizzard. Total gaming revenue reached $5.62 billion, representing a 43% year-over-year increase. The content and services segment was the primary driver of this performance, surging 61% to over $5 billion. Excluding the impact of the Activision Blizzard acquisition, organic growth in this segment would have been limited to 8%.
Despite the overall revenue gains, the company faced challenges in its hardware business, which saw a 29% decline in revenue to approximately $525 million due to lower Xbox console sales. Furthermore, the Activision Blizzard subsidiary reported an operating loss of $440 million, attributed to ongoing post-acquisition integration costs. While Game Pass achieved record revenue and average revenue per subscriber, and the company reached new highs in monthly active users, the financial outlook remains cautious.
Looking ahead to the second quarter, Microsoft anticipates a decline in gaming revenue in the high single digits, largely due to continued weakness in hardware sales. Additionally, the company expects content and services revenue to remain relatively flat. This projection is influenced by accounting practices regarding revenue recognition, as income from Game Pass subscriptions and online-connected titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is recognized ratably over time rather than at the point of sale.
