Microsoft
The second quarter fiscal year 2026 results for Microsoft demonstrate strong overall financial growth, primarily fueled by significant expansion in cloud services and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Total revenue reached $81.3 billion, representing a 17% year-over-year increase. This performance was largely driven by the Intelligent Cloud segment, which grew 29% to $32.9 billion, and the Productivity and Business Processes segment, which rose 16% to $34.1 billion. Conversely, the More Personal Computing segment experienced a 3% decline, impacted by weakness in the gaming sector.
Operating income for the quarter grew 21% to $38.3 billion, supported by operational leverage and efficiency gains, despite substantial investments in AI talent and compute capacity. Net income saw a significant 60% increase to $38.5 billion, bolstered by a $10 billion gain related to the OpenAI recapitalization. Diluted earnings per share reached $5.16, a 60% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The company maintained a robust capital return program, distributing $12.7 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
Capital expenditures rose 66% to $37.5 billion, reflecting a strategic commitment to scaling AI infrastructure and cloud demand. Approximately two-thirds of these expenditures were directed toward short-lived assets, such as GPUs and CPUs, to support Azure platform growth and AI product development. Commercial bookings surged 230%, driven by major commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, while the commercial remaining performance obligation reached $625 billion. These results underscore a period of aggressive investment in long-term AI monetization, balanced by strong cloud-based revenue growth across global markets.
