Kadokawa Dwango’s financial results for the second quarter ended September 30, 2016, demonstrate a period of steady growth and strategic investment. The company reported consolidated revenue of 99,795 million yen for the first half of the fiscal year, representing a 6.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Operating income rose significantly by 26.1% to 4,419 million yen, while profit attributable to owners of the parent grew by 57.8% to 3,020 million yen. Based on these results, the company revised its full-year consolidated forecasts upward, projecting 202,000 million yen in revenue and 6,000 million yen in operating income.
Performance across business segments was mixed. The Publication segment served as a primary driver of profitability, achieving an 11% revenue increase and a 304.2% surge in operating income, fueled by the recovery of graphic novels, strong media-mix performance, and growth in e-books. Conversely, the Web Services segment experienced a decline in income due to strategic investments and increased event-related expenses, though it remained aligned with internal plans. The Video and Game segment saw revenue growth of 12.6% driven by international copyright and content distribution, yet operating income fell by 9.6% due to a lack of major hit video titles compared to the prior year.
The company continues to focus on digital transformation and infrastructure reform, particularly regarding the niconico platform, where it is transitioning to HTML5 and high-definition streaming. Additionally, the group is expanding its educational footprint through N Senior High School, which saw enrollment grow to 2,015 students by October 2016. These initiatives reflect a broader strategy of integrating digital-native content with physical experiences to maintain long-term competitiveness.
