The financial results for Kadokawa Dwango for the first quarter ended June 30, 2017, reveal a period of revenue growth accompanied by a significant contraction in operating income. Total revenue reached 49.9 billion yen, a modest increase from the 49.0 billion yen reported in the same period of the previous year. However, operating income fell sharply to 790 million yen, down from 2.7 billion yen in the prior-year quarter, and the company recorded a net loss attributable to owners of the parent of 23 million yen.
Segment performance was mixed across the company’s core business areas. The Web Services segment experienced both revenue and profit declines, driven by a reduction in premium Niconico members and ongoing investment costs associated with new service launches. The Publication segment saw revenue growth, bolstered by strong e-book and e-magazine sales, though operating profit declined due to the underperformance of mainstay graphic novels and comics. Similarly, the Video and Game segment reported higher revenue but lower operating profit; while social games performed well, the video division suffered from the poor commercial performance of live-action theatrical releases.
The company’s financial position as of June 30, 2017, showed total assets of 239.3 billion yen, with cash and cash equivalents totaling 83.7 billion yen. Operating, investing, and financing activities all recorded net outflows during the quarter. Despite these challenges, management maintained its full-year revenue forecast of 212 billion yen and an operating income target of 5.8 billion yen, noting that investments are proceeding according to the established fiscal plan.
