Gamecity Hamburg
The Hamburg-based indie studio released its sci-fi action-adventure title. Assemble Entertainment published the game.
Hamburg-based indie studio Tiny Roar released its sci-fi action-adventure XEL on July 12, 2022, with ASSEMBLE Entertainment publishing. The announcement, issued by the regional industry initiative Gamecity Hamburg, marks the launch as a local success story and showcases the city's support structures for game developers.
XEL uses a top-down perspective and follows the protagonist Reid as she uncovers her mysterious past on the planet XEL. Players collect gadgets to master challenging dungeons and solve puzzles. The studio documented its development through Steam devlogs covering gadgets, inspirations, puzzle design, and weapon concepts, giving players insight into the creative process.
Development took 14 months and was enabled by federal games funding. Over that period the team grew from 11 to 20 members, a notable expansion for a small independent studio. The release is framed as evidence of how public funding can help studios scale and ship a commercial title.
Tiny Roar also received the Hamburg Prototype Funding from Gamecity Hamburg in 2022 for its next project, a prototype called HEXAGONE, for which a sneak peek is available on the Gamecity site. The announcement points readers to the studio's website, the Steam page, and a release trailer. Surrounding page content lists other Gamecity Hamburg activities, including incubator programs, prototype funding calls, gamescom presence, and networking events, reinforcing the organization's role in nurturing the local games ecosystem.
