GungHo Online Entertainment
GungHo Online Entertainment’s financial results for the third quarter of the fiscal year ending December 2005 reflect a period of significant business expansion and strategic investment, despite a decline in short-term profitability. The company reported a net sales figure of 3,494 million yen, representing a 13.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This growth was driven by the steady performance of its flagship title, Ragnarok Online, and the launch of one new commercial service and two beta services, bringing the total portfolio to eight online games.
Profitability metrics, however, experienced a sharp contraction. Operating profit fell to 76 million yen, a 78.6% decrease year-over-year, while quarterly net profit dropped by 97.3% to approximately 11 million yen. These declines were primarily attributed to a 521 million yen increase in selling, general, and administrative expenses, fueled by aggressive advertising campaigns at events like the Tokyo Game Show and upfront costs associated with new service launches. Additionally, the previous year’s net profit had been bolstered by the reversal of valuation allowances for deferred tax assets, creating a difficult year-over-year comparison.
The company’s financial position underwent substantial changes due to strategic capital activities. Total assets rose to 9,228 million yen, largely due to the acquisition of investment securities following a third-party allocation of shares from G-Mode. To fund these investments and future operations, GungHo increased its reliance on debt, resulting in a significant rise in both short-term and long-term borrowings. Cash flow from investing activities reflected an outflow of 4,850 million yen, while financing activities provided a surplus of 5,531 million yen. Looking ahead, the company plans to transition to consolidated financial reporting starting in the fourth quarter, incorporating GungHo Mode and Game Arts as subsidiaries.
