Exploring the Thrilling World of Squid Craft Games

The second annual Twitch Rivals Squid Craft Games, a Minecraft-based competition inspired by the Netflix series, demonstrated significant growth in total engagement during its March 2023 event. By expanding participation to include English-speaking creators alongside the original Spanish-speaking base, the event achieved 19.4 million hours watched, representing a 33% increase over the previous year. This growth was supported by a rise in co-streaming, with 190 channels participating compared to 125 in 2022.

While the event saw a 20% decline in peak viewership—dropping from 2.1 million in 2022 to 1.6 million in 2023—the average viewership remained stable at approximately 1.03 million. A key finding is the shift in audience distribution; whereas the top five creators previously accounted for two-thirds of total viewership, they represented only 44% in 2023. This indicates that the event’s reach became more decentralized, with viewership spreading across a broader array of international creators and languages, including a notable increase in French and English-language engagement.

The data suggests that diversifying the creator pool is an effective strategy for broadening an event’s demographic reach and total hours watched. By leveraging a larger network of co-streamers, organizers can mitigate the reliance on a few top-tier channels, creating a more sustainable and expansive viewership model. As one of the largest creator-driven events of 2023, the Squid Craft Games serves as a case study for the impact of inclusive, multi-language casting in maximizing the reach of digital esports competitions.
