Mobile Dev Memo
Featuring and chart placements act as untargeted ad impressions.
It's like a billboard: its effectiveness depends on whether the product advertised truly resonates with passersby, not just its location.
Mobile app developers often rely on historical data to forecast install uplift from platform featuring and chart placement during launch planning. However, relying on past performance metrics is inherently flawed due to the volatility of exogenous factors, such as seasonal trends and competitive launch windows, as well as the ongoing pressure of app store ranking inflation. Because platform placements function as untargeted ad impressions, their conversion efficacy is highly dependent on the specific appeal of the app, meaning that standardized estimates fail to account for the unique performance characteristics of individual products.
To address these limitations, the analysis proposes two alternative modeling methodologies. The first approach involves a top-down model that estimates total impressions for a specific demographic and platform, which are then converted into downloads using conversion rates derived from soft launch data. The second, more robust approach is a hybrid model that adjusts these estimates by comparing the app’s soft launch conversion rates against broader platform benchmarks.
While both methods rely on assumptions regarding platform-specific traffic—such as the weekly average users of featured pages—the hybrid model is superior because it directionally accounts for differences in app appeal. Ultimately, the analysis concludes that developers must move away from the assumption that all featuring or chart positions generate uniform install volumes. By integrating soft launch performance data, developers can create more realistic projections that reflect the actual conversion potential of their specific app within the competitive mobile ecosystem.
