DeNA Co.
DeNA’s operating results for the fiscal year 2016 demonstrate a period of financial growth and strategic transition. The company reported annual revenue of 143.8 billion yen, representing a slight increase over the previous year, while operating profit rose to 23.2 billion yen under IFRS standards, a 17% year-over-year improvement. This growth was primarily driven by the successful integration of the Nintendo alliance, improved performance in international game operations, and a significant turnaround in the sports business segment.
The game business remains the company's core pillar, benefiting from the release of high-profile titles such as Fire Emblem Heroes and Super Mario Run. These collaborations, alongside the strong performance of existing titles like Granblue Fantasy and Gyakuten Othellonia, bolstered segment profits. While the game segment saw a 7% decline in total annual revenue, segment profit grew by 9% to 28.3 billion yen, reflecting more efficient operations. Conversely, the sports business experienced a notable 39% revenue increase, reaching 13.8 billion yen, and successfully shifted from a segment loss in the prior year to a profit of 1.1 billion yen.
Financial health was further supported by a substantial increase in profit attributable to owners of the parent, which reached 30.8 billion yen, up from 11.3 billion yen in fiscal year 2015. This surge was largely influenced by the recognition of income tax benefits related to deferred tax assets and tax refunds linked to previous losses in the international game business.
Looking forward, the company is prioritizing governance and compliance reforms following investigations into its curation platform business. Management has committed to strengthening internal oversight and business execution as part of a long-term strategy to establish new business pillars beyond gaming. The company maintains a stable cash position, with consolidated cash and cash equivalents totaling 88.2 billion yen at the end of the fiscal year.
