Square Enix Holdings
Square Enix Holdings reported its consolidated financial results for the three-month period ending June 30, 2016, demonstrating strong top-line growth despite a decline in bottom-line profitability. The company achieved net sales of 51,193 million yen, representing a 21.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Operating income also rose by 13.1% to 8,949 million yen. However, ordinary income fell by 32.5% to 6,446 million yen, and profit attributable to owners of the parent decreased by 11.1% to 5,336 million yen, largely impacted by foreign exchange losses.
The Digital Entertainment segment served as the primary growth driver, with net sales reaching 37,541 million yen, a 23.9% year-on-year increase. This performance was supported by the continued success of established mobile and PC browser titles, alongside contributions from new releases such as Mobius Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Heroes II. The Amusement segment also saw a 22.1% increase in net sales, though operating income for that division declined by 11.6%. Conversely, the Merchandising segment experienced robust growth, with a 21.8% increase in sales and a 33.2% rise in operating income, fueled by strong demand for character goods and soundtracks.
The company maintains a stable financial position with an equity ratio of 75.7%. While the group continues to navigate a rapidly evolving market characterized by shifting consumer preferences toward smart devices and increased competition in Western console markets, it has maintained its consolidated forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017. The results were prepared in accordance with Japan GAAP, and the company adopted updated accounting standards regarding depreciation methods and the recoverability of deferred tax assets during this period.
