The perceived conflict between game mechanics and narrative is determined by how a player interprets their interaction.
The interaction between game rules and fictional narratives is often mischaracterized as an inherent contradiction or a failure of design. Rather than viewing elements like character respawning as logical errors or narrative incompleteness, these phenomena should be understood as pseudo-fictional events. This framework shifts the focus from the game’s internal logic to the player’s interpretive process, asserting that players actively distinguish between the formal constraints of the game environment and the integrity of the fictional world. By separating these layers, players can reconcile mechanical necessities with narrative consistency without perceiving a breakdown in the experience.
This interpretive strategy relies on a principle of charity, wherein players assume that developers intentionally exclude certain gameplay mechanics from the narrative to maintain the quality of the overall experience. Consequently, what is frequently labeled as ludonarrative dissonance is not an objective property of a game’s design, but rather a subjective outcome of how a player chooses to engage with the medium. This approach mirrors the cognitive strategies audiences employ in literature and television, where viewers routinely ignore formal constraints to preserve the coherence of a story.
Ultimately, the study of video game aesthetics must move beyond identifying perceived contradictions and instead analyze the sophisticated ways players navigate the tension between rules and fiction. By recognizing that form-fiction incoherence is a byproduct of the player’s interpretive act, researchers can better understand how audiences maintain immersion despite the presence of non-diegetic mechanics. This perspective clarifies that the perceived gaps between gameplay and story are not failures of the medium, but rather essential components of the interactive experience that players resolve through active, charitable engagement.
