Single body. The German games industry consolidated into a single trade association.
On January 29, 2018, the two main German games industry associations, BIU (Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware) and GAME (Bundesverband der deutschen Games-Branche), merged in Berlin to form a single body called "game – Verband der deutschen Games-Branche." The merger consolidates representation of the industry's interests toward politics, society, and media under one roof. Gamecity Hamburg, the regional network, announced its support as a founding member in the capacity of an extraordinary (außerordentliches) member.
Felix Falk, previously managing director of the BIU, leads the new association as managing director. A five-person board was elected the same afternoon: Ralf Wirsing of Ubisoft as chair, Linda Kruse of the Good Evil GmbH as deputy chair, and Stefan Marcinek of Assemble Entertainment, Lars Janssen of Travian Games, and Jens Kosche of Electronic Arts as members. The board is presented as reflecting the breadth of the German industry, spanning large international publishers, free-to-play developers, serious games providers, and indie studios.
The association represents developers, publishers, and other stakeholders such as eSports organizers, universities, and service providers. It is a shareholder of the USK (the German age-rating self-regulation body) and the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur, hosts the Deutscher Computerspielpreis, and, through the merger, becomes the organizer of gamescom, described as the world's largest computer and video game event. Falk called the day historic, saying a unified industry can advocate more convincingly and forcefully for its interests.
