This represents a 28% year-over-year increase. Hardware sales, third-party software, and favorable foreign exchange rates drove this growth.
The financial results for Sony’s Game & Network Services segment for the first quarter of the 2023 fiscal year, ending June 30, demonstrate significant revenue growth alongside shifting profitability metrics. The division generated $5.38 billion in revenue, representing a 28% year-over-year increase. This performance was primarily driven by robust hardware sales, strong third-party software performance, and favorable foreign exchange rates. Conversely, operating income declined by 7% to $343 million, a contraction attributed largely to amortization expenses associated with recent corporate acquisitions, including Bungie.
Hardware momentum remains a central pillar of the division’s strategy, with 3.3 million PlayStation 5 units sold during the quarter, bringing the total lifetime install base to 41.7 million consoles. Software performance was equally substantial, with 56.5 million total units sold across the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 platforms. Revenue composition highlights the dominance of digital ecosystems, as in-app purchases accounted for $1.47 billion, followed by $1.06 billion from digital unit sales, while physical copies contributed $170 million. Network services, including PlayStation Plus and advertising, generated $868.1 million, supported by a stable user base of 108 million monthly active users.
Looking ahead, the company has adjusted its full-year revenue forecast for the gaming segment to $29 billion, reflecting confidence in continued market demand. While the operating income guidance for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, remains steady at $1.88 billion, the current data underscores a strategic pivot toward digital service integration and hardware scaling as the primary engines for long-term growth within the global gaming market.
