State of the Game Industry Report: 2022

The global game development landscape in 2022 reflects a period of significant structural and cultural transition. PC remains the primary development platform, while the PlayStation 5 maintains its position as the leading console choice. Conversely, mobile development has experienced a decade-long decline in developer interest. Emerging hardware like the Steam Deck and PlayStation VR2 continues to capture attention, yet the industry remains deeply skeptical of speculative technologies such as the metaverse, cryptocurrency, and NFTs. These concerns are rooted in anxieties regarding environmental sustainability, ethical business practices, and the long-term viability of blockchain-based models. Workplace culture and labor dynamics have emerged as central themes, marked by a measurable improvement in work-life balance as 60 percent of developers now maintain a 40-hour work week or less. Despite this progress, the industry struggles with systemic issues, as a majority of studios have failed to adequately address internal reports of misconduct and toxicity. This environment has fueled a growing movement toward collective bargaining, with 55 percent of developers supporting unionization and nearly one-quarter of workplaces engaging in active discussions regarding labor organization. The industry continues to prioritize accessibility, with a record 39 percent of developers integrating inclusive design features into their projects. However, broader efforts toward diversity and social activism remain inconsistent across various studios. Furthermore, the workforce remains predominantly male and early-career, highlighting a demographic imbalance that persists alongside ongoing tensions between developers and major platform holders. As evidenced by the 34 percent of developers who support Epic Games in its legal conflict with Apple, there is a clear desire for greater autonomy and a shift in the power dynamics that currently govern the digital distribution ecosystem.

The analysis examines how emerging technologies and shifting consumer behaviors are reshaping the global gaming ecosystem. Blockchain‑based monetisation, particularly non‑fungible tokens (NFTs), has met with mixed reception. While the promise of secure, legitimised trading is evident in titles such as Axie Infinity, major publishers have reacted cautiously. Valve’s ban of crypto games on Steam and Ubisoft’s withdrawal from NFT initiatives after player backlash illustrate a broader industry reluctance, compounded by regulatory constraints in jurisdictions like South Korea and platform‑level anti‑steering rules from Apple and Google. Consequently, publishers are exploring “NFT‑like” features under less controversial branding to satisfy investor appetite while mitigating gamer discontent. Live‑streaming and cloud gaming are emerging as pivotal drivers of player engagement. Interactive shows such as Facebook’s Rival Peak and PAC‑MAN Community have amassed over 100 million minutes of viewership in three months, opening new monetisation avenues. The semiconductor shortage is accelerating the migration of high‑end titles—Elden Ring, Starfield—to cloud platforms. Services like NVIDIA GeForce NOW and Google Stadia have already recorded user growth, while publishers leverage cloud to deliver AAA content on legacy hardware (e.g., Nintendo Switch) and broaden access through subscription bundles such as Game Pass Ultimate. This trend signals a shift toward broader platform reach and subscription retention. Geographically, the Asia‑Pacific region dominates global game revenues at $42.6 billion, driven by China’s mobile‑first market and an 8.7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). North America matches this revenue figure at $42.6 billion, with a 7.9% CAGR. Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa are projected to grow faster than the global average, increasing their share of worldwide revenues. COVID‑19’s impact on Asia‑Pacific was muted, partly due to a strong console gaming emphasis that helped sustain growth. The findings collectively underscore the importance of balancing innovative monetisation models, expanding platform accessibility, and regional market dynamics in shaping the future of gaming.

Gaming Spotlight 2021 Review

Mobile gaming has solidified its position as the primary driver of global digital games consumption, with spending projected to extend its lead to 3.1 times that of home consoles in 2021. This growth is characterized by a merging of the mobile and console experiences, as mobile devices increasingly offer console-quality graphics and cross-platform social features. Data indicates that global consumers downloaded over 1 billion games per week in Q1 2021—a 30% increase over pre-pandemic levels—while weekly spending rose 40% to $1.7 billion. The industry is increasingly defined by cross-platform connectivity and real-time online features. Top-grossing titles like Roblox and Genshin Impact demonstrate the success of multi-platform rollouts that prioritize cross-play and cross-save functionality. This trend is supported by a surge in console companion apps and game livestreaming platforms. For instance, Steam saw a 60% increase in peak daily concurrent users between October 2019 and March 2021, while engagement and monetization on apps like Twitch and Discord reached new heights as social gaming habits became more ingrained during the pandemic. Market research into gamer sentiment reveals a nuanced landscape for ad monetization. While overall sentiment toward in-game ads improved in the United States between 2019 and 2020, formats offering a direct value exchange performed best. Rewarded video ads and playable ads received the highest positive sentiment, whereas standard video ads remained the most divisive due to their perceived intrusiveness. Findings suggest that ad oversaturation correlates with negative sentiment and potential churn, particularly in high-saturation genres like word and trivia games. This analysis covers global market trends from 2014 through early 2021, with specific deep dives into U.S. gamer surveys from Q3 2019 and Q3 2020. The data is synthesized from App Annie’s mobile market estimates and IDC’s primary research, which includes surveys of over 3,000 gamers and analysis of digital and physical spending across mobile, PC, and console segments.

State of the Game Industry 2020

The global game development landscape in 2020 is characterized by a transition toward next-generation hardware and a diversifying array of digital storefronts. While PC and mobile remain the primary platforms for the majority of the nearly 4,000 surveyed professionals, significant momentum is building for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with over a third of developers working on cross-generational titles. In the immersive reality sector, the Oculus Quest has emerged as the leading platform for both interest and active development, signaling a shift away from tethered VR solutions. Despite this technological evolution, the industry remains heavily self-funded and continues to struggle with demographic representation, as three-quarters of the workforce identifies as male and nearly half of all studios lack formal diversity or accessibility initiatives. Labor practices and monetization models are currently undergoing intense scrutiny. Although a majority of developers support unionization, there is widespread skepticism regarding its near-term implementation. Workweeks exceeding 40 hours remain common, often driven by self-imposed pressure rather than external mandates. Economically, the industry is moving toward "pay to download" and subscription models, yet deep dissatisfaction exists regarding traditional revenue splits. Only a small fraction of developers believe the standard 30% platform cut is justified, with most advocating for a more equitable 10-15% share. Confidence in emerging digital ecosystems varies significantly based on perceived infrastructure and business viability. The Epic Games Store maintains the highest level of long-term optimism among developers, whereas Google Stadia faces substantial doubt regarding its technical requirements and pricing. Apple Arcade occupies a speculative middle ground, reflecting a broader uncertainty about the long-term profitability of subscription-based gaming. As the workforce remains relatively young—with over 60% of professionals possessing less than a decade of experience—the industry’s future trajectory depends on balancing these rapid technological shifts with sustainable labor practices and more equitable distribution models.

Asia Spotlight Report: The Impact of COVID-19 on China’s Video Game Market in Q1 2020

The video game market in China experienced a significant surge in engagement and revenue during the first quarter of 2020, driven by widespread stay-at-home mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Total industry revenue for the quarter is estimated to have been approximately 30% higher than in the same period of 2019. This growth was characterized by increased mobile, PC, and console usage, as gamers sought entertainment and social connection during prolonged quarantine periods. Key findings from an April 2020 survey of 1,057 Chinese gamers highlight the depth of this shift: 97.2% of respondents reported spending more time on mobile games, while 94.6% increased their time on PC titles. Spending also rose, with 81.6% of mobile gamers and 76.3% of PC gamers reporting higher expenditures during the lockdown. While major titles from publishers like Tencent and NetEase dominated the market, the period also saw a notable decline in the internet cafe sector, which was forced to close entirely. Survey data suggests a lasting impact on consumer behavior, as 57% of former internet cafe users indicated they do not intend to return to those venues once reopened. The pandemic also forced a rapid evolution in industry operations, particularly within the esports and development sectors. Esports tournaments successfully migrated to online formats, supported by municipal government initiatives to reduce regulatory barriers. Conversely, game development and outsourcing studios faced productivity challenges, leading to project delays for some global titles. While the surge in home-based gaming provided a substantial revenue boost, the industry faced headwinds regarding hardware manufacturing, component scarcity, and a decline in advertising revenue for smaller, ad-supported titles. Overall, the period solidified gaming as a primary social and entertainment outlet for Chinese consumers, with many users reporting a newfound acceptance of gaming within their households.
