The Road to gamescom 2021 initiative, organized by Gamecity Hamburg, served to facilitate the participation of five Hamburg-based indie game studios in the digital Indie Arena Booth Online. The program aimed to provide these developers with professional exposure, business development opportunities, and access to the broader gamescom and devcom ecosystem during the 2021 digital trade fair season. By supporting studios such as Tiny Roar, Mooneye Studios, OneManOnMars, Klickaffen, and Radioactive Dreams, the initiative sought to bridge the gap between local talent and international industry stakeholders in a virtual environment.
The Indie Arena Booth Online, produced by the Hamburg-based firm Super Crowd Entertainment, functioned as an interactive, browser-based multiplayer platform. Designed to replicate the experience of a physical trade fair, the platform featured 13 distinct virtual worlds where visitors could engage with 120 indie games through live chats, demos, and interactive content. The event demonstrated significant digital engagement, attracting over 16,600 unique users who collectively spent 25,000 hours on the platform. With an average session duration of 100 minutes and 4,400 interactions per booth, the platform proved effective at maintaining visitor interest through gamified mechanics.
Beyond mere exhibition, the program provided participating teams with strategic support, including a preparatory workshop on trade fair strategy, access to the devcom B2B conference, and facilitated matchmaking with potential business partners. This comprehensive approach allowed the selected studios to maximize their visibility to press, streamers, and industry professionals. The initiative highlights the continued viability of virtual platforms for industry networking and product promotion in the wake of the global pandemic, emphasizing the importance of interactive, community-focused digital spaces for the indie game sector.
