Ubisoft Entertainment SA
Ubisoft’s financial performance for the first half of the 2021-22 fiscal year reflects a period of strategic transition characterized by stable revenues and significant investment in long-term development. The company generated 718.2 million euros in net bookings, bolstered by the enduring popularity of the back-catalogue and the strong performance of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. While revenue remained steady at 751.3 million euros, operating income experienced a contraction to 44.1 million euros, largely driven by a deliberate increase in research and development expenditures, which reached 306.5 million euros. This investment strategy aligns with the company’s broader objective of scaling its workforce to over 20,000 employees and fostering internal talent through new shareholding programs.
The company has adopted a cautious outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year, revising its net bookings forecast from growth to a range of stability or slight decline. This adjustment follows the strategic decision to defer the release of several key titles, including the Prince of Persia remake and The Division Heartland, to the 2022-23 fiscal year. Despite these delays, management maintains its non-IFRS operating income target of 420 to 500 million euros, signaling confidence in the underlying strength of its current portfolio and operational efficiency.
Financially, the organization maintains a robust balance sheet with total assets of approximately 4.76 billion euros and access to significant liquidity, including 369.4 million euros in unused credit lines. Although net financial debt stands at 572.8 million euros, the company remains in full compliance with its financial covenants. By prioritizing sustained R&D investment and capital management through share buybacks, the firm is positioning itself to navigate ongoing market uncertainties while preparing for a more robust release schedule in the coming fiscal periods.
