Create free accounthey this is Jonas I document the entire journey to becoming a game developer and I think it's so amazing how much you can learn about someone by looking at his or her room every little detail every little item in a room has its own little story so if you ever make a story based game definitely take this opportunity show the room of your main characters because that teaches the players so much about who those characters are and I thought let's give you a little demonstration let me show you around a bit in my room this is how the room of a game design student looks like at the moment I study game design in Berlin but that's about to change as well [Music] oh by the way I didn't clean up or anything this is the original state of my room [Music] so let's start with my workspace you can see it's a standing desk this is where I put my mouse pet microphone for
recording YouTube stuff then here right behind my workspace is a list with books I want to read and this is my weekly schedule it's a circle because all this goes all the way around Monday selecting a video idea to stay human research Thursday recording video honestly this plan call out up saying pretty quickly so basically now I'm just making mostly just making the entire video on the weekend I try to do as much as possible during the week and if you're wondering why this doesn't seem like that much one video per week that should be doable that's obviously because I'm studying I've been studying at the same time and I've been developing again at university which I'll show you I don't know when but you'll see it the games already done so there's not a lot that can go wrong beautiful laptop of course which is enormous Oh see that that's a little
nice detailed stuff like that a little sticker from my little four-year-old sister she put that there and of course I left it there because it reminds me of her I like it a little crappy audio interface I really should get a new one oh this is my purse this purse is for children but I'm kind of okay here we have a little detail on the table she's my elicenser which you need for using Cubase which is a music software let's continue with the shelf right over my working space couple of programming books here's a game design book Bewdley nothing from the book Wow I'm really glad I read it so let's see I marked here different definitions of what a game is honestly who cares what again I don't care players take action within the design system of a game and the system responds
to the action nothing too special in there honestly game Starcraft of course games haven't played it in a while because I switched over to overwatch now I'm or watch addict oh here's award I won so this is how I store my awards it's Cubase here we have a little Raspberry Pi which used for coding in the first semester lasting tape I love that [ __ ] this is not a sponsored video by the way it's a flute my dad gifted this one to me it sounds super annoying though if you have to listen to this for a long time gets really annoying my graphic tablet I actually use that for the animated videos so quickly animated videos I'm not good at drawing and not good at painting because I don't practice enough but I actually enjoy drawing and painting usually when I have some time
to do some drawing and painting I really enjoy it but I rarely do it and I'm not good at it let's continue with this corner right here yes there's a piano in the three years that I've lived here I feels the piano maybe two times three times it's not even plugged in what can I say ask you and whenever I play camera I mainly want to improvise I'm not interested in playing any pieces that somebody else wrote for me usually whenever I go through numerology my laptop goes in there in this massive pack then I can pull it which is actually very convenient get a lot of [ __ ] for it to know things like well where you traveling Jonas [Music]
if nice holy days you know that sort of stuff I get that a lot of your energy I don't catch okay it's very convenient and my laptop is too big so what should I do this my alarm clock I never hear it when it rings Baisakhi wakes you with its light brightens up that's okay somebody should probably clean your little cards here here I've wrote down a schedule for a day whenever I feel like there's a lot to do when I don't know how to handle this is obviously very helpful to make a plan for the day so you know what you do at which time and most of the time when you write it down like this you see that it's actually pretty manageable and that you can probably get it done in this pull over I transport the mouse oh it's actually nice my mouse is nice always break probably due to my bad transportation the notes for the last video branch here probably a lot more noise for love more videos this is also pretty interesting this is
a game sometimes I try to get me find my life a bit more so I write down my tasks onto these little cards and they have little points attached to them and then whenever I manage to complete a task those points to complete as many of these tasks as possible and then the idea was that I always have a couple of playing cards with me in this way a little tasktracker a little game if I trust tracker in my pocket but it went how it always went I did it for a couple of days and then I suddenly stopped doing it I'd only have discipline seems no I'm actually I can be pretty disciplined but only if I think it makes sense so basically on the cheap paper I wrote down why I want to quit my studies so it's on the plus side why I think it's a good idea to drop out now and on the minus side I think it's not a good idea to drop out now yeah the minus side mostly comes down to that I don't know what I want in the future having a complete game design
degree would obviously be good for finding a job later on but then once again at the moment I feel like I'll never ever want a regular job in any kind of company so that's why there's a lot more on the plus side here and a lot less on the minus side here I mean yeah it's it's a bit risky because you can never know what you want and but then in the other hand I value my time I think one year one and a half years is a lot of time and I can get a lot of [ __ ] done in that same amount of time if I focus on my gut feeling right there maybe in the future I punch myself in the face for not finishing my size or maybe I'll just continue studying who knows that's awesome options I guess it's not that big of a deal it feels like it here another article that I wrote seems like how to make a successful game yeah I don't know what
makes a successful game [Music] alright let's continue with this corner right here this is my bad this bit is not supposed to be in here this the last one I read contagious how to build word of mouth in the digital age recently starting this one worked because my ultimate goal is obviously to turn every single one of you into gaming addiction okay but seriously I realize this is a little weird okay I have Elon Musk and Gary Vaynerchuk basically those are just my role models and I'd like to see them as often as possible to remind myself of where I want to get and basically just what I like about them is that they help other
people out there pretty selfless they want to solve problems of society they want to get society forward and that's what I want to do as well I definitely want to be helpful useful I want to do good that's what those two guys stand for for me and that's why I happened them right next to it another attempt to get me find my day guess what here you see all the days I completed so I completed one week and four days and then I dropped the system so this was basically just meant to help me form some good habits here for example gratitude in the morning I wanted to think about a couple of things I was grateful for then planning three tasks for the next day meditation didn't last very long basically I can put that obviously that's next to my bed because it was supposed to remind me to do all of those things yeah problem once again if you
skip one or two days you skip a couple of days basically all your motivation to keep going is done because you lost the streak so that's a big issue still looking for a way to gamify this stuff so far this hasn't worked but keep trying the near we basically have some of my goals this I think is pretty crucial if you want to be successful if you want to get anywhere you need to think about what you actually want where do you want to get what we want to have because if you don't know what you want then you'll never get it there's a zero percent chance that you will reach your goals if you don't know what your goals are so this is passive basically just a definition of my goals I want to be able to work on games and not work too much and sustain a family and work on cool projects this is basically plan how to get there it's pretty pretty crazy so let's not look at the team and then here this is more or less four pillars I
decided on so first of all I want to think long tail so what's good for me in the long run for you in the long run to finish your studies milk once again one year is a lot of time focusing on running and becoming better I want to keep that beginner mentality I never know everything there's always something I'll have to learn I'll never be an expert that knows everything and that's when I continued learning providing a lot of three value and building a brand so for example making useful YouTube videos for you that's step number three and step number four is providing more value in exchange for money I can only keep providing value for free if I get some value as well because otherwise I can't maintain that model yeah monetization is just a very important and necessary part of that equation all of those three things are directed to monetize it if you don't provide any value for free then it's
pretty difficult to ask for money because nobody knows if your stuffs any good just basically the same stuff but written down in a more confusing way and then for each of those pillars I just throw a couple of examples down what I could do and they don't look that nice because at night I don't really pay attention and I mess them up I think we don't have to look at that too deeply because you'll you'll see when it's there next we have this corner right here hell yeah let's start at the very top of the shelf you have an additional monitor that one's actually broken I think and I specifically bothered to use it with the Raspberry Pi in that shelf you can't code on a Raspberry Pi if you don't have a screen oh here I have a little bit of dog actually wanted to use that one for continuing the development on Ava's Nova that never happens but maybe it will happen hopefully I'll
finish it this is Charlie a character I made in game school I see you can stand oh my god that's creepy Charlie no no get back go back to sleep Charlie usually I would never be able to create something like that but I mean with the guidance we get at the game school it was possible this is the very block I got when working at me me me productions or when I did my internship there and I didn't finish I'm Emmys by the way if anyone of you is watching this video ideas for games especially if it's port games then this sort of stops pretty useful if we want to make PC games the series of useful for the most part I think I prefer digital prototyping if I make digital games and analog programming if I make
analog games use very stone files these speakers are really cool I use them for making music for a very long time the walls are very thin so I'll prefer working with headphones in this flat when I'm four different flat or to a different place I'll definitely plug these babies in again little babies okay now let's get down here where it gets really interesting all right so this is the part for our camp cyber chats it's a bit like chess by the place very differently then here's another one it's a cool thing about ghosts that has very simple rules but it's still super complicated and has a lot of death another one of the things that I really like but I never do which is cool game is a cool game also what's pretty fascinating about metaphors that it's already a soft game because computers
are already able to calculate through an absolutely every single move you can make in this game all the way to the end and that means they're their software on the internet where you can play match for against computer and it tells you exactly in how many moves you will lose basically tells you you will lose in 20 moves and then you make a move and then it tells you you will move loose in 19 moves and if you make a really bad move so that number goes down even faster you will lose in two moves but if you play absolutely perfectly it will go down by one every move and it just keeps telling you you will lose in 17 moves you will lose in 16 moves and then you will lose in 60 move so that's pretty cool and fascinating about this game okay I guess we can get to my notebooks down here most of them are from University projects as well sorry little shout out to how to be a game designer study for making these books happen this was up school student game design projects you can download at school on each Taleo for
free give it a little shot it's a pretty cool minigame to this basically what we did in the second semester a lot of modes we took during the development [Music] design here on one side there love my personal game ideas having books like this is pretty useful can also just store a bit of information stuff you want to learn for example a little bit of stuff about founding a company how all of that legal stuff works because I do a bit of research on that then sometimes some notes for the books that I've read my main takes away for example from Jab Jab Jab right hook are here and then which book mister stylist it's not about this something I wrote down for myself this are the notes from mastery by George Leonard also pretty fun to
read these notes after the fact because they pretty much summarizes the entire book that's my personal then when you start the book from the other side there's more stuff in there there is the entire development of spoon tasting baby which is probably one of the first games I've ever released the baby goes absolutely nuts and you have a little spoon and the baby shoots with lasers onto your spoon and spits out the food and there's fire coming out of the mouth of the baby and it's basically just a monster baby and you're trying to feed it and so the idea is cool the gameplay is cool the problem is it's pouring pretty quickly a couple of different backgrounds I tried to make this look really nice difficulty curve banner it's something here oh yeah this is the project booklet of cakeship cakeship it's available for free on edge today oh it's a local multiplayer game where two grandpas fight each other on a giant
cake it's a super fun game if you have a friend to play with definitely check out cake shift so once again our university project big shout out to the university once again this is a little bit better documentation with more images that's very nice I can can show you yeah that's basically my my drawing level if you ever wondered how good I am at drawing then we once again fly to models on characters clay oh yeah here you can see how the finished game looks like this doesn't have the character models yeah a couple more screenshots how the game looks like this Howard let's go do the rest a bit a little quicker I mean this one's heavy this is gonna be my art book from the first and for the second semester once again this is not due to me being good as an artist is just due to me getting useful guidance slump silhouettes I
really like like doing the task that was fun just so many silhouettes and then once you have a good silhouette you can start painting cool stuff into that silhouette actually that works really well should do that more often this technique is pretty damn powerful I mean oh my God look at that usually I would never be able to paint something like this but if you have a silhouette it's way easier to paint something like this and back by the way those two have exactly the same silhouette it's pretty fun how many different things you can fit into the same silhouette same for those too those have the same silhouette as well and then you see here where we started doing the same thing without doing the silhouette first just work really starts going downhill really starts going down because we started drawing objects and characters it's really bad yeah this is a fun fun
one this one I just did for fun I basically took the silhouettes of overwatch characters and penned it in my own characters or skins or whatever you want to call this this is actually pretty fun and also tells you a lot about how the overwatch team designs their characters because all of their characters have very unique outlines they have very unique silhouettes no matter what you paint into tracer it always looks like tracer and same goes for my Korean road for my Cree I definitely like this one the skeleton McCree then here once again we have amnok McCree and what the hell is this and there's gotta be a good raw dog skin here I think I really like this one is really cool as well he won't risk road hog skin it looks like that oh my god the character creation of Charlie starts this how Charlie looked like in its
beginning stage the story behind Charlie is that he's a ghost and he's not just a usual who goes but he's a cool goes he's a DJ ghost so at midnight he starts playing music and I came up with an entire plot yes my amazing drawing skills at work okay here for some reason there some good sketches again so this is how Charlie looked when I got started and then here yeah he he got better and better actually his hand was really nice and then in the second semester we basically took a photo of that character model quality to photoshop and reworked the entire thing here started with a glitter outfit in the end I decided to go with I think I decided to go with something like this anything like this oh yeah here's the visual development for up score usually I post a little more
useful and interesting content about game development if you're interested check that out I think we're through the entire room hope you enjoyed it and found it interesting and entertaining as I said rooms teach you a lot about a person hope this helps you to connect a little bit with me and to understand me a little better Who I am what I want where I'm going thank you very much for watching have an amazing day see you in the next one bye [Music]
This analysis examines the workspace and personal environment of a game design student based in Berlin, serving as a case study on how physical surroundings reflect professional identity and creative methodology. The student’s room functions as an extension of their development process, housing a mix of academic materials, technical hardware, and self-improvement tools. The environment highlights a transition from formal university education toward independent game development, characterized by a focus on long-term career sustainability, brand building, and the practical application of design theory.
Key findings from the workspace inventory reveal a structured approach to productivity, including the use of task-tracking systems, goal-setting frameworks, and a commitment to continuous learning. The student utilizes a variety of resources, such as programming and design literature, digital prototyping tools, and analog game references, to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical execution. A significant portion of the student's output—including projects like Cakeship and Upscore—is documented through physical project booklets, which demonstrate the iterative nature of character design, silhouette-based art techniques, and game mechanics development.
The student’s methodology emphasizes the importance of "gamifying" personal habits and maintaining a beginner’s mindset to foster long-term growth. Despite the challenges of balancing academic requirements with independent projects, the student prioritizes the creation of value-driven content. The room serves as a repository for both successes and failed experiments, such as abandoned habit-tracking systems, illustrating a pragmatic, trial-and-error approach to professional development. Ultimately, the environment underscores a shift away from traditional employment toward an entrepreneurial model, where the student seeks to leverage personal projects and digital presence to sustain a career in the game industry.
