Tencent Holdings has acquired a majority stake in the Poland-based game developer and publisher Techland. Announced in July 2023, the partnership marks a significant shift in ownership for the studio, which is widely recognized for its work on major intellectual properties such as the Dying Light, Call of Juarez, and Dead Island series.
Despite the change in majority ownership, Techland maintains that it will retain full control over its intellectual properties and continue to operate with creative independence. Founder and CEO Paweł Marchewka will remain in his leadership role, emphasizing that the partnership is intended to support the studio’s existing vision and facilitate the execution of future projects. The specific financial terms and the exact percentage of the stake acquired by Tencent remain undisclosed.
This acquisition aligns with Tencent’s broader strategy of securing interests in established global gaming companies. The Chinese conglomerate currently holds varying levels of ownership in numerous prominent industry players, including Riot Games, Epic Games, Ubisoft, and Electronic Arts. By integrating Techland into its portfolio, Tencent continues to expand its influence across the international gaming landscape while allowing the studio to leverage the conglomerate's resources to reach new development milestones.
