Sega Sammy Holdings
The Sega Sammy 2015 Annual Report details a period of significant financial contraction and strategic pivot for the conglomerate. Faced with a shrinking player base in the traditional pachinko and amusement sectors, alongside regulatory delays that hampered new machine releases, the company reported a net loss of ¥11.2 billion and a 6% decline in net sales to ¥354.9 billion. Operating income fell sharply to ¥17.6 billion, down from ¥38.5 billion the previous year, as the group grappled with restructuring costs, impairment charges, and underperforming business segments.
To address these challenges, the company implemented a comprehensive organizational restructuring effective April 2015, consolidating its operations into three core pillars: Pachislot and Pachinko Machines, Entertainment Contents, and Resort Business. This shift is designed to improve decision-making efficiency, clarify accountability, and reduce reliance on the volatile pachinko market. The strategy emphasizes a transition toward digital gaming, supported by the acquisition of international studios and a focus on high-quality, immersive intellectual property. By leveraging its "Noah Pass" system and expanding its global footprint in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, the company aims to capitalize on the growth of mobile and network-connected gaming.
Despite the fiscal headwinds, the group maintains a stable financial foundation with an equity ratio of approximately 60% and a cash position of ¥190.8 billion. This liquidity is intended to support long-term investments, particularly in the integrated resort sector, which the company views as a critical future growth engine. Management has set ambitious targets for fiscal 2016, projecting a 15% increase in net sales and a return to profitability, as it seeks to restore operating income to the ¥100 billion level through rigorous cost control, optimized value chains, and a renewed focus on high-potential digital content.
