Sega Sammy Holdings
Sega Sammy Holdings reported a challenging first half for the fiscal year ending March 2015, characterized by a 5% year-on-year decline in consolidated net sales to 154.2 billion yen and a significant 72% drop in operating income to 3.4 billion yen. The company recorded a net loss of 2.0 billion yen for the period, largely driven by revisions to the sales schedule for pachislot machines following changes in prototype testing operational methods. These performance headwinds necessitated a downward revision of full-year forecasts across multiple segments, including Pachislot and Pachinko Machines, Amusement Machine Sales, and Amusement Center Operations.
The Pachislot and Pachinko segment faced a 15% decline in net sales, with annual pachislot unit sales projections slashed from 374,000 to 222,000 units. Conversely, the Consumer Business saw a 10% increase in net sales, bolstered by strong performance in digital games and the inclusion of Atlus titles. However, this growth was insufficient to offset broader operational difficulties, including the impact of Japan’s consumption tax hike on amusement center foot traffic and underperforming revenue-sharing models in the amusement machine sector.
In response to these results, the company initiated a comprehensive group structure reform. This strategy involves consolidating operations into three core pillars—Pachislot and Pachinko, Entertainment Content, and Resort Business—to streamline decision-making and optimize resource allocation. Furthermore, the company has committed to a 6 billion yen reduction in annual fixed expenses starting in the next fiscal year, targeting labor and operational costs in underperforming areas. These structural changes are intended to restore profitability and prepare the organization for future investments in the domestic integrated resort (IR) market, which remains a primary long-term growth objective.
