Create free accounthey guys this is a little bit more of a informal video um it's a channel announcement uh and a thomas brush's career announcement um i'm officially quitting game dev i'm starting a new youtube channel see you later um bye no i'm kidding i'm gonna keep doing this channel uh keep making games i'm i've got father i'm working on i've got some tools i'm working on for game development plenty of youtube videos for the remainder of the year but i have a second youtube channel and it's all about well short horror films i'm making short horror films and if you want to click below to subscribe to that brand new channel it's called thomas brush films if you want to subscribe and also be sure to hit that notification bell because we are launching i am launching a new short horror film it's called the unlocking and it's tentative i think that's what it's called the unlocking and we're launching that in november on that channel so it's kind of important for you to hit that notification bell for you to hang out with me during the
premiere of that uh short horror film this is my official second short horror film um the first one was called the man in the cradle what's funny is this is a ten thousand dollar project i've already spent about seven thousand dollars on this project i'm not gonna make any money from this uh it's not a business venture i don't even know how many views it's gonna get it's probably not gonna get that many views but i'm doing it because i kind of got frustrated with myself this last year and the year before um i've been so focused on doing the things that work right and what works is making indie game videos on youtube which i love doing it it's just i kind of got stuck in a rut what works is making video games and making online courses and tools for you guys and all these things are great and i'm gonna keep doing it full force but i got stuck in a rut where every time i wanted to try something different
i would i would almost talk to myself worse than a my worst boss would talk to me which is you don't have enough time thomas don't do it you don't have enough time work on what you know works right don't we always tell ourselves that work on what you know works right what brings in income for you do that and so i kind of got stuck in that world which is my youtube channel making videos trying to get views online course creation game development live streaming i'm kind of honestly a little bit burnt out i'm gonna keep doing it and i'm no i'm not going anywhere but i felt guilty um about two months ago because i remembered what i told myself when i was a kid and that well the passion i had when i was a kid i wanted to make video games and i also wanted to make films and believe it or not i you know i made a lot of animations for newgrounds.com a lot of really moody strange animations when i was a teenager
my storytelling formats aren't really limited to just games but for some reason i limited myself to games and so that's why i want to jump into the short film arena again it's probably not going to pay off um but this is sort of me doing maybe doing you guys a favor um because i think a lot of you you want to declare publicly you want to say i am going to make video games i am going to be a game developer and you're kind of a little bit scared to do it and the truth is you're not a game developer but you wish that you could call yourself a game developer well i am not really a filmmaker i've made one short film but i'm going to say that right now i'm sure i'm a filmmaker and i'm a good one right that's just me being confident that's the way my my brain works i say this is what i am nobody's going to tell me otherwise
watch me succeed and so i'm going to take the first step forward and say this is what i am i'm a filmmaker and i have like 10 subscribers on this channel the the new channel i've got um so i guess what i'm saying is don't be too afraid to to just publicly proclaim something and and make it happen don't be afraid you could you can do it you've got it i'm doing it right now it's kind of embarrassing but i'm going to do it um you know don't what was the second thing i wanted to talk about in this video the second thing if you ever find yourself in a career or a path that is working for you you probably should deviate the moment that it's working for you because you're gonna end up in a rut most of the time you'll end up in sort of a rut where you're not really being creative and you're just doing stuff
because it works so i'm not saying change careers i'm saying try something different see if it works if it doesn't work that's totally fine use what you've learned to inform the career you were in right now for me i i have this opinion that and i'm like 99 sure on it in fact i would bet 10 000 on it i mean i am that's how much my that's how much the short for the sh the short film costs uh i would be willing to bet ten thousand dollars that i'm going to be a filmmaker and a game developer for a very long time i'm going to do both that's that's probably what my career is going to be probably forever and i'm totally cool with that games and films i love i love doing both um and the reason i say that is because filmmaking might not be the smartest move for me right now to spend some of my time i'm going to spend a lot of time probably like two three hours a week on filmmaking that might not be the smartest move
in the short term but in the long term me deciding to take a a new career path and try out some new things it can inform game development in particular the storytelling side of game development and so i'm definitely going to probably benefit from this deviation so i want to encourage all of you to be willing to try new things and tell people you're trying new things and to fall in your face and fail publicly fail often publicly the reason why you want to do that is you're really not going to learn much if you're not failing publicly because i guess it hurts more in that weird i'm telling you to hurt more but while failing publicly when it hurts really bad you really don't want to do it again you don't want to fail bad the second time and so everything in you fights to do it right and to do a good
and also guys failing whether it's in game development storytelling filmmaking entrepreneurship graphic design whatever failure is beautiful because it's just it thickens your skin it makes you a a more resilient person and that doesn't mean you have to be some macho tough guy what it means is you're able to say you know what i'm gonna try and i'm gonna be a chef this week or the week after that you know what i think i'm gonna go i'm gonna go learn how to i don't know raise horses and and you're not afraid to do it because it's like who cares if i fail i failed a thousand times at so many things um failure is good so i'm going to try new things and so that's what i'm doing with this short film youtube channel i want to fail i guess i want to fail i want to fail at this because that means that at least i'm not stuck in a rut all right i will see you on that channel
for those of you who are interested be sure to click that notification bell and i'll uh well i'll see the rest of you on this channel we're going to keep making content keep making video games i appreciate your time see you later bye
The expansion into short horror filmmaking serves as a strategic pivot to combat creative stagnation within the game development industry. By launching a dedicated channel for cinematic projects, the creator aims to break the cycle of focusing exclusively on high-performing, revenue-generating activities. This initiative is framed not as a departure from game development, but as a necessary diversification to foster long-term professional growth and improve storytelling capabilities within interactive media.
The project, which includes a ten-thousand-dollar investment in a short film titled The Unlocking, highlights a commitment to creative risk-taking despite the lack of immediate financial return. The methodology emphasizes the importance of public accountability and the psychological benefits of failing in a visible arena. By publicly declaring a new professional identity as a filmmaker, the creator argues that individuals can overcome the fear of judgment and the restrictive comfort of established routines.
Ultimately, the thesis posits that professional longevity requires periodic deviation from successful career paths. Engaging in secondary creative pursuits, even those that appear inefficient in the short term, provides essential cross-disciplinary insights that enhance one's primary work. The experience of public failure is presented as a vital tool for building resilience and preventing the burnout associated with repetitive, profit-driven workflows. This approach encourages creators to embrace vulnerability and pursue diverse interests to maintain both creative passion and long-term career sustainability.
