Modern Times Group Q4 2016 Full Year Report

Modern Times Group concluded the 2016 fiscal year with record sales of SEK 17,299 million, representing a 5.4% organic growth rate compared to the previous year. This financial expansion was primarily fueled by robust demand for scripted drama and branded entertainment, alongside significant subscriber gains within the Viaplay platform. Operating income before items affecting comparability rose to SEK 1,347 million, demonstrating the company’s ability to generate core profitability despite ongoing strategic shifts. To reflect this improved financial standing, the Board proposed an increased annual dividend of SEK 12.00 per share.

The company is currently undergoing a fundamental portfolio realignment, transitioning away from traditional broadcast assets to prioritize digital and online gaming sectors. A cornerstone of this strategy is the acquisition of InnoGames, which serves as a vehicle for long-term growth in the interactive entertainment market. While the MTGx division reported an operating loss of SEK 84 million in the fourth quarter due to heavy investments in esports expansion, these expenditures are viewed as essential components of the broader digital transformation strategy.

Financial stability remains a priority, as evidenced by a net debt/EBITDA ratio of 1.4, which marks a slight improvement in leverage from the prior year. The firm ended the period with SEK 845 million in cash and a net debt position of SEK 2,186 million. Although the company maintains a solid cash flow from operations, performance metrics were mixed, with Return on Capital Employed reaching 21% while Return on Equity declined to -2%. These results underscore a period of aggressive capital allocation and structural change as the organization pivots toward a digital-first business model across its international operations.
