Microsoft lured top Twitch personalities such as Ninja and Shroud to Mixer in 2019. Mixer closed in July 2020.
Microsoft's Mixer platform failed because its strategy of poaching top Twitch streamers, such as "Ninja" and "Shroud," for millions of dollars did not result in audiences reliably following these individuals to the new platform. This outcome challenges the assumption that top streamers command robust, loyal communities that transfer across platforms, suggesting a fundamental flaw in Mixer's "top-down" approach.
An analysis of over 2.2 million Twitch streamer revenue data from August 2019 to October 2021 reveals that while income distribution is heavily right-skewed, with a small percentage of top streamers earning the majority of revenue, it consistently aligns with a lognormal distribution rather than a power law. This finding is critical because it indicates that "preferential attachment," where success disproportionately begets more success and audience loyalty, is not a dominant factor in income generation for the vast majority of streamers, even among top earners. Therefore, the expectation that a few prominent streamers could transfer a power-law-like community to a new platform was likely misguided.
The success of YouTube Live, which nearly doubled its hours streamed from Q1 2019 to Q4 2021, suggests that a "middle-out" growth strategy—converting existing video-on-demand creators to live streamers—is more effective than directly signing prominent streamers. This implies that future platforms should target a broader base of "upper mid-tier" streamers for more economical network generation and sustainable growth. While the study focuses exclusively on Twitch during a period potentially influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and significant venture capital, its conclusions highlight the importance of understanding audience dynamics and distribution characteristics beyond simplistic assumptions of celebrity influence.
